The forest grew around her. Lush trees with wilting flowers, petals rained from the sky. Ahead she saw a clearing filled with animals and a clear, sparkling lake. The animals came to her as she approached, they pulled away. The trees began to rot as the sky darkened. The animals fled the clearing their flesh fell from them in bloody masses. The dreamer weakly fell to her knees horrified. This image shadowed a deeper memory lingering just out of grasp. A shadow loomed her. Slowly, she turned…a ringing punctured her vulnerable state. Mild confusion washed over her, calming her blooming fear. The ringing sounded again, piercing her dreams once more. This time she woke abruptly, covered in sweat. The telephone beside her bed rang again. Quickly she composed herself after her nightmare. She answered the phone.
“Hello,” She moaned
“Detective Kaitlyn Keates?” said a nervous voice on the other end of the call.
“Speaking,” she replies cautiously.
“Um, you presence was requested at the Smith Construction Warehouse on Prescott street on the outskirts of town. They found another girl,”
“Another one?”
“Yes, Detective Ryans will arrive shortly to accompany you.”
“Okay,” She hung up the phone and got ready. Not soon after the pair of detectives arrived at the warehouse.
Maybe one day she would get used to this. Having been briefed on the way over, her stomach churned sickly knowing what awaited her inside the old warehouse. Before her stood to many small town police officers catching their first whiff of a body, their stomachs weren’t holding out as well as hers. ‘I guess everyone has their first time,’ she thought. Many of these cops had only ever seen a body on criminal shows shown on prime time television. At seven this morning, local workers had entered the factory to find what was left of the girl. The workers that found the body were still in a state of panic as they waited pail faced and shivering at one of the further away cars. She decided speaking to panicked witnesses could be a job for the chief.
Bravely she inhaled a lungful of clean air before she entered the warehouse. It was larger than the outside gave it credit for, several levels towered above her, the floor covered in many sized boxes. Smith Construction with a seemingly random number stamped on the side labelled all the boxes she could identify. Calmly she inhaled her first breath of inside, the hot and sticky air was mingled with a musty library smells and those of a thick rusty kind; blood. Her stomach churned uncomfortably again. Behind her, Detective Ryans followed cautiously. . She leads the way to the body.
Before they set their eyes upon the body, they know it is there. Glancing at the folder in her hand, she steadily places it to one side of the body before her. She crouches. Once a beautiful girl, she observes, now reduced to a mangled body. Her beauty faded now only to slice nightmares into all who look on.
