The year... 1926... I walked down the night-filled streets as I looked forward, enjoying the nightlife for the first time without being chaperoned. I could hear the soft clanking of my high-heeled shoes along with the smooth jazz music coming from the clubs and buildings I passed by, running a hand through the short tresses of my brownish-red hair.
I’ve had my hair long and tied up in tight bun for so long, but I went to have it cut in a short, nice bob cut up to my ears. I looked at my reflection as I passed by the glass windows of a small café. I saw my bob cut hair and my face covered in heavy makeup. My lips were painted with a red ‘kiss proof’ lipstick and my cheeks were covered in pink blush powder...
Yes, I was one of the rebellious young girls... the ones who were sick and tired of their sheltered life... It’s a hard being a woman in these times... us women are under appreciated and trapped... but at that moment, I was getting my freedom, whether my parents liked it or not...
“♪ Never know how much I love you,
Never know how much I care.
When you put your arms around me,
I get a fever that's so hard to bear ♫
♪ You give me fever,
When you kiss me,
Fever when you hold me tight.
Fever! In the morning,
Fever all through the night.
Now you've listened to my story,
Here's the point that I have made:
Fever! 'till you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn~! ♫”
I sang out loud while still walking down the street, snapping my fingers to the rhythm of the song. Some bystanders stopped to listen to my voice, clapping once I was done. I smiled at them and kept making my way down the streets. Oh, how much I loved that song~! My best friend showed me this song yesterday once it played on the radio.
My best friend was also the one who convinced me to be free, who convinced me to get my freedom... Once reaching the corner of the sidewalk, I saw a nice red car parked on the corner and a tall, dark and handsome man leaning against the car, waiting for me. I smiled at the sight and walked up to my boyfriend. Once I reached him, I greeted him with a small kiss on the lips as he handed me his car keys. Next step to obtaining my freedom; do what women aren’t frowned upon to do... a good example is driving a car.
I went to the driver’s seat and sat in as my boyfriend sat beside me in the passenger’s seat. I put the key in the ignition and started to drive slowly around the streets. I turned on the radio in the car and the song I was singing earlier started to play, making me smile more... so far, freedom wasn’t so bad... it was exciting... now, I have joined many of the young women who have chosen to escape their prison of tight corsets, long skirts and good behavior. We have decided to break free from our cages and flap away like carefree birds... hm... The Flappers... that’s a fitting way to refer to us...
- Title: Life and Times Of A Flapper
- Artist: Doll Shi
- Description: This is a story I wrote for my US History class about the Flappers, a group of rebelious women in the 20's that refused to be trapped as normal housewives and wanted freedom. It was their rebelion that led to all the women's rights in these times. The song is called "Fever" by Peggy Lee since the flappers loved jazz music.
