The woman smiled. She looked at me and I silently begged for her not to see my blush.
"Thank you for not saying anything. I'm really sorry to have put you in that position." she apologized sincerely. She was still holding onto my arm.
"Uh, no problem." I replied nervously, not exactly knowing what to say. I mean, what was I supposed to say to her.
She smiled apologetically, then looked down. She shuffled her feet. I wondered if she was unaware that she was still holding onto my arm. The woman pursed her lips but didn't let go.
"I hate to ask this of you, but would you please allow me to go home with you? I would dearly appreciate it if you would." she said suddenly, her face hopeful.
My eyes widened and I raised my eyebrows. She wanted to go home with me? Was this real or was it a dream? I was positive that this kind of thing never happened to me.
"Why would you want to go home with me? Don't you have a home of your own?" I asked, bewildered and confused. Surely she had a home somewhere in the city. All she had to do was give me directions and I would drive her home. But no fooling around.
She bit her lower lip. "Well, you see, I just came into town and I was going to live with a friend. But when I got to her apartment, it turned out she was out of town on some trip and forget to leave me a key. So I don't have a place to live. So, if I could maybe just stay with you until my friend comes back, I would really appreciate it." she explained, still shuffling her feet.
I sighed. What was I supposed to do? Let her make things out on her own? She was a beautiful woman. Guys would go after her like bees for honey. And she probably didn't even know which street was which.
"Alright, get in." I said, opening the other door like a gentleman. She smiled and got into the passenger seat. I got into the driver's seat.
"So where are you from?" I asked curiously, buckling up my seatbelt.
"Chicago, Illinois." she replied with a smile. I turned on the heat so she wouldn't be cold.
She bit her lip and looked at me as I started up the car.
"I'm Serinda by the way. I apologize for not telling you sooner." the woman said meekly.
I smiled a bit. "That's fine. My name is Nathaniel. But you can call me Nate if you want." I told her.
She smiled and nodded as I began to drive over to my apartment.
I thought about her name. It was very beautiful, just like her appearance. But why did it make me think of swans? I must have been a very strange person if that was the first thing I thought of when I heard her name.
I certainly will not tell her that. I thought to myself.
We didn't really talk much during the ride. I really didn't know what to say. I was afraid that if I said something I'd make a fool of myself. And I had done that enough in my life time. No chance would I want that to happen again, especially with Serinda, since she was probably the most beautiful woman I had ever met.
Suddenly the awkward silence was broken by Serinda.
"How old are you?" she asked curiously.
I blinked. I was a caught a bit unaware by this question.
"Twenty-four." I answered a little nervously for really no reason. I kept my eyes on the road, hoping she didn't see a blush.
Gah! I felt like an elementary boy who had a silly little crush on the girl he sat next to in class! Trust me, I know. I've been through that. Don't want to go through it again!
Serinda smiled. "I'm twenty-tree. So, do you have a girlfriend?" she replied.
A knot formed in my stomach at her question. No, I had never had a girlfriend. Nor had I ever gotten a date that had actually gotten to know me after I asked them out.
"Uh...no, I don't." I answered a little awkwardly.
She seemed to be relieved. She tucked some hair behind her ear.
Why was it she had to be so beautiful?! I bit my lower lip, trying to keep my eyes on the road. We were almost to my house. Yes, house. I didn't have an apartment. I used to since last year, but I had saved up. I liked the extra space a house had.
I would not do anything. I would not do anything stupid. At least, I would try not to do anything stupid. Of course, that's a bit difficult when you're the King of Clumsiness. No joke, I was actually labeled that in middle school. I was that, and many other endearing nicknames that made my face redden.
Finally we were there. I was only giving this girl a place to say. I wouldn't do anything to make her uncomfortable. I wouldn't make a move on her, I wouldn't be a jerk.
I let myself out of the car and opened her door for her. Serinda grinned and stepped out. I then proceeded to lock the door and walked up to my front door. It really was freezing outside. I was practically begging for the warmth of my house.
