Chapter 1: The night I saw him
I hate dreaming. Seeing people...seeing what they do…it’s not right. It’s unforgivable to me and them. It’s because of this ‘gift’ that I have. I don’t want it, but wishing it won’t change a thing because I know it’s mine to keep forever. I try to stay awake. I try to force blissful thoughts. I try not to see. But I just keep on dreaming. That’s when I figured that I’m not normal anymore.
Miyu’s mind washed away with white mists. She looked around and realizes that she’s in the middle of the woods, sitting on the limbs of a tree. The night sky was dazzling with rivers of stars and the glow of the full moon. A slight breeze made the leaves dance with the current, but Miyu couldn’t feel it. When she’s in her wanderer body, she can’t feel anything. It’s because that body isn’t her real, physical one that was left lying on her bed. This other body of hers is see-through, almost like she was a living ghost. People can’t see her and if they or anything else goes to her, they’d just glide on by as if she wasn’t there.
Now Miyu was waiting for someone to come by because when she dreams, there’s always a person she has to be by. It just happens. She turns to her right as a voice from a distance came in a cruel yell.
“Boy, boy, you better hope I don’t catch you!” it was a man and he was full-on sprinting.
“I already am!” a boy replies, the one being chased. He was huffing as he ran past the tree Miyu sat on. She notices that he was carrying a small pouch in his left hand.
“They should’ve thrown you out the first time you stole!” the man continues. He was breaking down in sweats and slowing. “But they took pity in you! Oh, but this time they’ll kick you out for sure or even throw your life in jail!”
Thief? Miyu thought, but it didn’t surprise her. Almost all of her dreams showed her criminals so this wasn’t any different.
The man had gotten extremely slow and had stopped in front of Miyu, hunched over, knees bent, huffing. Miyu hopped off the branch and slowly floated down to him. She gives a quick glance over to where the boy ran off to but he was out of sight now.
“He stole it…that b*****d of a kid” the man wheezed. “I’ll be back tomorrow, just you wait. And I’m bringing reinforcements too. Jewels like those don’t come by everyday” and with that, he turns and wearily makes his way back to town.
Miyu watches him for a few seconds before heading off to where the boy was. She was famous all across the world for her dreams because she can easily capture a criminal in an instant. Once she wakes up, she sketches a picture of the bad guy and gives it to the police to handle. She can even tell them where their hideout is. That’s why everyone fears her.
She reached the boy and he was still running but a few moments later he stops, turns around, and laughs. The pouch held in his hand was now his pride and joy.
“A perfect snatch!” he bellows. “Stolen by me—” he fakes a drum roll “—Haru!”
His grin was the largest grin Miyu had ever seen, but it wasn’t the happiest because behind that smile was the saddest of frowns. Haru was staring off into the distance as if he was remembering something or someone. Maybe, when he was shouting with victory, he was waiting for people to applause for him. But no one was there.
“No worries” Haru nods as he sits back against a tree. “I’m doing fine. Now what I want to know is what’s in this here…” he holds up the small pouch up in the air so that it dangled in front of his eyes. He reaches in and pulls out a necklace. It had a thin silver chain with a royal blue crystal shaped as a crescent, small stars decorated along the edges. “Now that’s amazing”
Haru was awe struck by the shining beauty he held before him. Miyu felt the same way as she stared. She knows full well that it’s stolen goods but before she lets the police have it, she wants to see it close up. Miyu walks over to where he sat and kneels in front of him. Now they both stare wide-eyed at the beautiful piece. Haru’s attention shifts slowly from the necklace to behind it. There was a strange shape—two blue balls that seemed to float in midair. It was small and seemed almost see-through. Miyu blinked cause she now had a feeling he could see her.
That’s impossible. She tries to convince herself. He’s looking at the necklace or something behind me, just not directly at me. She inches back slightly with unease.
Haru sees the small round blues move a bit. In his mind he’s debating whether that was an afterglow of the crystal or his eyes playing tricks on him. Without a seconds thought, he reaches out his hand that held the necklace between fingertips. Miyu flinched because not only did she realize he saw her, but he could touch her. His palm rested on her cheek and she could almost feel the solidness of his skin.
That’s not supposed to happen.
