It was one of those types of night that should have been busy but all dead quiet. The pouring rain that flooded the streets made no sound. I found it odd that I couldn’t hear anything but the reason why was lost to me. I had lost everything that should have been to me in a flash of light. He said that it was just a kiss, but his eyes said it was something more. So did her eyes. She knew what she was doing. I hate myself for letting them get to me.
As I walk these empty streets alone, I feel no chill in the air, no rain, nor loneliness. I am completely numb. My feet carried me a path I have taken many times. They take me the swings of a nearby park. I sit down on one of the sits and gently kicked off. It seems like an eternity passed when I felt a hand push my shoulder.
“Thanks for the push. I don’t seem to have the energy to get any higher than that.”
“Not surprising for someone in your state,” A man spoke in deep voice.
“Either you’re psychic or I looked that depressed.”
“A broken heart is easy to spot.” I hear a slight pitch change. He found that amusing. Normally I would have run from this stranger but he seemed different from any other person. An added bonus he is pushing me on a swing.
“So tell me why you are out on a night like this. Don’t tell that you go out looking for girls with broken hearts.”
“No, I was looking you. It’s time.”
“Time for what?”
“For me to take you.”
“Will it hurt?”
“The pain and suffering has ended for you.”
“Okay, I guess. Will you be gentle?”
“I am always gentle. Are you ready?”
“Will push me higher? I want swing for a little while longer.”
“Okay, I will give you five more minutes.”
He continued to push me for the extra five minutes. I drag my feet across the grass to stop myself.
“I am ready now, but answer me this. Why can’t I hear or feel anything anymore?”
“Because,” I hear a rustle of feathers from behind me. “You are no longer a part of this world. So, the noises and feelings of this realm are mute to you. You heard feathers a moment ago, right?” I nod slowly, finally realizing what is happening. “That was a sound of your new realm. We have swing sets there too. You will love it.”
“Cool, but how did it happen? I don’t remember.”
“You killed when she pushed you into traffic. The bus didn’t have time to stop. I am sorry that it had to end this way.”
“Don’t worry about it. I am not. Let’s go. I want swing some more.”
“Okay.” In gust a wind, we were gone. I wanted to look back, but something inside of me advised against it. Later I found out that my soul had only wandered about fifty yards away from the accident. The only things I missed was him crying over me and her getting arrested for murdered, but I can live with that, because he is now with me, pushing me on a swing.
