~Chapter 1~
Sitting on the train alone makes me feel mature. Even though I'm fourteen, meaning I kind of have to be mature. I'm also touched that my dad trusts me to do everything right. But this situation makes me nervous too. What if I get off at Oshawa instead of Cobourg? But I know my town so I'm good.
I look out the window and see the trees become trees instead of blurs as the train stops at a station I do not know the name of or the town I am in. I could guess it’s the Port Hope train station but we haven’t passed Oshawa yet. (Don’t take my amazing geography to heart I am horrible at it. I could have been on my way to Florida right now but think I was in Alaska.)
I take my book out of my purse almost spilling everything else in it on the floor being me and find my page I was on. But before I could read a word on that page of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland I hear the simple words: “Is this seat taken?” from a male voice with a nice sort of shy tone underneath the masculine part.
I look up to a handsome guy with blonde hair and a deep shade of blue in his eyes. He’s wearing a green hat and has it on backwards which only looks good on some people but he has it made. His hair curls up at the ends, hat hair. And his clothes are raged but are what a teenage boy, like him, would call “normal”. His bag has a long black strap that came over his shoulder and across his chest. He is what a teenage girl, like me, would call “cute”.
I was stunned and before he got confused and walked on because I didn’t respond, I replied with “Umm... N-no, it’s...free.” Like an idiot still staring at him.
He smiles at me and sits down. And of course his smile only makes me blush.
I look away, out the window and we start to leave the station. My heart is beating so fast I can’t breathe but then again, I was probably breathless from his smile. I pull out my cell phone and text one of m best friends Aly in Thunder Bay asking her what I should do. She answers, and her text says: “lol glance at him a couple of times and brush your arm against his arm to get his attention a little.”
I giggle a bit inside my head. Aly was always good with this kind of thing. So, I do what she says and it pays off. He starts to look back at me too. After a while he takes out his ear buds he had in his ears to listen to music. I look over at him again for about the fiftieth time now and he looks too. He smiles and says “Hey.”
“H-hi.” I say so nervously I was surprised I didn’t clean the entire train. (I only clean when I get nervous. And I mean the biggest test in your life and you go blank nervous.) I slowly start to calm down and keep texting Aly. I notice that I’m almost at the Cobourg train station so I make a move.
“Umm...so, where are you going?” I ask him.
“Cobourg, you?” he looks at me and smiles. His big, blue, deep eyes looking right into my dull brown eyes.
“Same, I’m visiting my Nan in Gorse Landing and the rest of my friends in Cobourg.” I smile. I like how he is getting off at the same stop as me. Maybe we could hang out.
“Visiting your friends?” his expression becoming puzzled.
“I moved to Thunder Bay two years ago with my mother. So, I was in Toronto visiting my father and now I’m going to visit my Nan and then visit my friends.” I explained.
He looks out the window and then back at me. “I see. So, maybe after we get off the train we could hang.” He blushes a bit which makes me giggle. But then I thought ‘Wait, I don’t even know his name.’
“Umm... I think I should know your name first, don’t you think?” I say with a smile plastered on my face, unmoving.
“Oh right... It’s... uh... Spencer.” He says. I’m guessing he doesn’t like his name.
“I see, mines Lily. It’s nice to meet you Spencer.” I hold out my hand for him to shake, which he takes.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” He laughs.
The train starts to slowly stop at Cobourg station after a while of talking to him and I start to realize that he’s texting his friend too.
I take a look in one of his texts: “dude this girl is amazing!” Is what it said. And what I do is blush, again. So, I look out the window for a second so I could calm down. He likes me too. This made me feel very special. I haven’t really had a true boyfriend before, only crushes and one boy who kissed me in the second grade, on a dare though.
I look back at him as he starts to get up and put his bag over his shoulder and across his chest again.
I put my book back in my purse; I didn’t want to put it away before. I was too nervous. I get up and he lets me go before him. As I get off the train I call my Nan to tell her to come and get me later because I have a friend I am going to hang out with first. Thank goodness she lets me, because if she didn’t I don’t think I would be able to see Spencer again.
After asking the station to hold my luggage till I get back I walk over to him trying to be graceful because I’m a total klutz. A couple of months ago I fell down the stairs and thankfully I wasn’t injured seriously. Two years ago around April, when I first moved to Thunder Bay I was fooling around with my friends Aly and Dawn in the gym and fell flat on my face. Thankfully I didn’t get hurt. Almost five years ago I had a Bunk Bed and it was metal, I had socks on climbing up the latter and I slipped and got a concussion. And in between all of that I’ve slipped on ice, tripped on the sidewalk and almost been hit by cars by falling over.
“Okay... where do you want to go?” I ask him almost tripping for the fiftieth million time.
“You tell me.” He says and I think about it carefully. Where do I want to go? The answer is simple but I need to go somewhere where he will enjoy too or else I will be enjoying myself and he will be miserable.
“Well Spence, I think that I would like to go to my beach that I miss very much.” I laugh and he grabs his bag and we start making our way to the sidewalk to make our way to the beach. And as we walk to the beach we talk more.
He is one year older than me, fifteen. He loves to read although he loves music a lot better. He plays guitar and sings a bit but he thinks he doesn’t sing very well. He has an eight year old brother named Luke and a three year old sister named Roxy. His Mother and father are divorced and he lives with his father now in Cobourg. He just got back from visiting his mother in Port Hope which he did not enjoy because his mother is quite the partier; the reason as to why his parents split. He loves fall because of its beautiful colours that he takes pictures of. He also loves to takes pictures and he’s thinking of becoming a professional photographer.
I told him about myself also. I also love the fall but I’m horrible at take pictures because my hands always shake. I also sing and play guitar and I want to become a singer or actress whenever I can. I want to be able to give my parents a nice life with better houses then they have right now. And also have fun with my friends without having any limits as to where we can go. My parents were going out but never got married because they would always fight. I have an older brother at the age of 18 in college named Shadow and a little half brother named Nathaniel at age 10 and he spent practically his entire first years at the Sick Kids Hospital because of some health issues. The reason why my mother and I moved was because she could go to school again to become a Surgical Processor for a hospital.
“So, how long are you in Cobourg for?” He asks.
“Until Saturday.” I tell him.
“You’re only here for a week?” He looks at me and I almost trip because of a crack in the sidewalk.
“Sorry, I’m a bit of a klutz.” I laugh nervously.
“Why are you apologizing?”
I shrug, not exactly sure why I was apologizing. We wait for the cars to pass by so we can cross the road and as we’re crossing I pull my short shorts down because I don’t want to seem like something I’m not. After that I fix my purple tank top. It wasn’t very low but I pulled it up anyway.
I felt the sun beating down on my skin. I am probably going to get a sun burn, I usually do.
We get to the beach and thankfully the lifeguard is off duty. That means we teenagers can go out as far as we want.
Most of the beach was empty except for a couple of groups of teenagers that were fooling around and having water fights. I stepped out onto the sand feeling the sand in my feet. Smiling, I bend down so I can take my flip flops off and burry my feet. The breezes just gentle enough.
I close my eyes, take a deep breath and exhale. “Just how I remember it.” I open my eyes and look out at the scenery. The sun was still up pretty high but soon the sky would be pink and stunning. I look at Spencer. “Thank you.” I say.
“For what?” He looks at me strange and laughs.
“For talking to me on the train and then bringing me here to the beach.” I smile up at him. Spencer is a bit taller than me.
He smiles back and we walk on towards the water. I look down at our feet while we’re walking and notice that he’s going to get his shoes soaked if he gets in the water because he’s wearing skater shoes.
I laugh a bit in my head. This guy I may have just met him but I already feel close to him and I can trust him. And I know that he likes me but I want him to do something first. Even if I only have him for a week I wouldn’t mind.
We get to the water and I slip my feet under the sand and take a deep breath. But I get interrupted by the calling of my name.
“Lily? Is that you?” I hear Ashley’s voice coming closer.
I role my eyes but then put a smile on my face. I don’t want to be rude but I really don’t like her. “Ashley.” I smile my best fake smile.
Kyle is with her. I really liked this guy before. We would hang out but in the end I never said anything and I do still like him a bit but not as much as I used to.
“Hey Kyle, how’s everything?” I ask him.
“Good.” He replies bluntly.
I was shocked. Kyle is never rude like Ashley.
“Um... Lily... Aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend?” Ashley smiles giving me the “You are SO not going to get this guy! He’s mine!” look.
“Um... yeah. Ashley, Kyle... this is Spencer,” I gesture towards him “Spencer this is Ashley and Kyle.” I finish up and Kyle nods towards him and Ashley pushes out her chest.
All Spencer does is nod back and smile. That makes me smile a true smile because he shows that he doesn’t have the slightest bit of interest in Ashley and he doesn’t really care about Kyle.
“Hey I got an idea! How ‘bout we all hang out and we can get ice cream!” Ashley squeaks and when Ashley has an idea and says it out loud we have to do it or she will literally ruin your life.
I smile another fake smile and Ashley insists that Kyle and I get the ice cream. I knew it was because she wanted Spencer. So, Kyle and I walked over towards the canteen they have on the beach. He slouched over and his dark brown bangs bounced from the way he walks. His eyes look sad and clearly in pain. I feel bad. I smiled a cheerful smile and looked directly into his eyes and didn’t even see his pain and suffering. Kyle probably didn’t even want to be here.
I stop and wait for him to notice I had stopped and when he does and looks at me funny but doesn’t speak.
“What’s wrong Kyle?” I ask him. My eyebrows arched in a way that makes me seem worried, which I am.
Kyle doesn’t say anything. He just stares at me but then his eyes looked even more pained. That shocked me. But all he does is close his eyes for five seconds, shut really tight, and then he turns and makes his way over to the canteen again. And I look down at my feet and walk slowly behind him.
We get the ice cream and I never thought I’d see a day when Kyle passes up something like ice cream. He would always get ice cream or candy if he could. It’s not like he’s chubby either. Kyle is very fit. My friends and I always wondered how he could manage it.
We had a silent walk back towards the shore where Ashley was practically on top of Spencer. And it looked like Spencer wasn’t enjoying it. He had a fake smile on, which is easy to tell, but his eyes were a little scared. It was a bit amusing and defiantly surprising because I’ve never seen a guy pass on Ashley. She has gone out with almost every guy and when Kyle and she were in grade 4 at St. Josephs Elementary, while I was at St. Michaels Elementary, they went out. Although I can’t really see what a grade 4 date would look like.
We walk up to them and as soon as Spencer sees me pretty much ignores Ashley. I stand there waiting for anything to happen, or at least for Ashley to notice Kyle and me. But while I was waiting I moved my hips so they were slanted and my weight was on my left leg and Kyle was to my left and I was close enough to Kyle that my hand brushed against his and it stayed there. Kyle didn’t move unless he didn’t feel it but it was more like he was waiting for me to hold his hand.
“Let’s walk over to the pier.” Ashley manages to say without even taking her eyes off Spencer. She latches on to his arm and obviously he doesn’t want to be rude so he just goes with it.
I glance at Kyle and his expression is something hard to describe. Painful but he also seemed to be blushing, probably because of our hands.
“Kyle, are you okay?” I ask him.
“I’m fine Lily.” He snaps.
I grab his hand noticing that Ashley was already dragging Spencer to the Pier. “Kyle don’t lie to me. Please, I just want to help.” I look into his eyes when they meet mine and for a moment he seemed like he was going to let me in but then he quickly takes his hand out of mine and walks on.
I suddenly feel like this day won’t end well. The sun has gone behind clouds and it looks like it’s going to rain. I am following behind Ashley, Spencer and Kyle and feeling miserable. Ashley’s all over Spencer, Spencer is letting her because he doesn’t want to be rude and Kyle is as miserable as I am but for a different reason which must be really bad.
“Oh my gosh!” Ashley annoying voice shrieks. “See that Spencer? The view is amazing!”
I role my eyes. Ashley is completely idiotic.
I walk towards the edge and look down. The water seemed deep but I could be wrong.
“Hey Lily? Want to swim with me?” Ashley insists
“N-no. I don’t really want to swim today.” I say and of course I’m not smart enough to back away from the edge.
“C’mon! It’s just a quick dip.” She tries to persuade me but then I feel her hands on my back pushing me and before I know it I’m falling face first into water that may not be as deep as it looks.
“Lily!” is all I hear before I hit the water.
