She walked down the dark and secluded dirt road, holding the gun her grandmother gave her 5 years back, the cold steel glimmered in the moonlight. Kairi couldn't believe it had come to this, he promised to be hers forever, to always be the one who would never leave.
Life had other plans for her, she had to leave for awhile. He said he would wait for her, and would be there to greet her when she returned. But on the day she had returned it was not Sora waiting, it was none other then Riku, holding something behind his back.
" Welcome home Kairi, this is for you." It was a papau fruit. " It's just a gift, from one friend to another." He held up the piece of fruit with his left hand and she saw something gleam in the sunlight. He saw how she was staring at his hand, so he lifted it and showed her the gold and silver band.
" I have a fiancee now, and she wants to meet you soon."
She smiled and reached for her bags, Riku picked them up before she could, Kairi watched him carefully. " Where's Sora? He said he would be here when I got back." He shrugged and walked on. " Is there something you're not telling me Riku?"
He set the bags down by his car. " Listen Kairi, some things have changed since you left six months ago, you know I am going to be married soon, well Sora has changed too, I really don't know if I should be the one telling you this.
He should really be the one to tell you." He tossed her bags into the trunk and slammed it shut. " I'll take you home, then I need to get back to work." " You left work to come and get me?" He helped her into the car and shut the door.
" Yeah, Adrian and I knew he wasn't coming to get you, so she covered for me so I could get you." She hung her head in sorrow. " What happen to the Sora I've come to love?"
" I can't give you an answer, I wish I could, but this is something I can't get involved with. It's nothing against you Kairi, you can come to me if anything happens, I want you to know that."
By the time he hit the driveway she was asleep, he sighed as he unbuckled his seat belt and got out of the car, he grabbed his key to her house and put her bags inside, then he carried her inside and put her to bed. Riku Caressed her cheek as she turned. " You don't deserve this Kairi, you really don't. If only I could have stopped him, maybe things might be different." A single tear rolled down her cheek, he kissed her and left, knowing the dawn would bring more pain.
He woke in a cold sweat, the sheets clung to his skin as he rose from the bed. Her hand grazed his lower back. " What's wrong dear?"
His ice blue eyes gaze was drawn toward the starlit sky.
" Someone special to me was coming home today, I was supposed to pick her up and take her home." Her azure eyes grew narrow as she remembered the girl who had won his heart before she stole it.
" Darling, don't worry about it, I'm sure your friend picked her up.
Come back to bed Sora." He turned his head toward the bed, but something was telling him not to. " Soon Michelle, right now my mind is to busy to slumber." " You don't have to sleep, we could do something else."
He walked away and said over his shoulder, " I don't feel like it right now babe, maybe later." She closed her eyes and drifted off, leaving him alone to his thoughts.
" How do I tell her? Should I tell her? I wish I knew what to do, I never thought this would happen."
Sora closed his eyes and remember the day she she left.
The sun was just beginning to rise beyond the shores.
He felt her breathe on him as she snuggled closer, Sora stroked her hair as he began to wake her. " Hey, it's time to get up honey." Her eyes fluttered open as she wrapped her arms around his waist. " No, I don't want the moment to fade yet."
He pulled her close as she tried to bury herself beneath the sheets. " Kairi, come on." He pulled the sheets off, and found she was gone. " Kairi?" Sora searched the room and couldn't find her, but as he finished checking in the closet she emerged from the bathroom fully dressed.
" Hey now, that's not very nice."
" I have to leave on time, no time for fun and games, although it is temping to forgo the trip." She smiled as he rose from the bed and put his arms around her. " No, you've been waiting for this long enough, no need to stay on my account." She kissed him as she buttoned her blouse, and felt his hands brush against the small silver buttons.
" No, you know better Sora." He did but that didn't stop him from trying. One look from her and his hands dropped but his expression remained the same. " I wish I could come with you." " You can you know, you don't have to stay home."
" No, this is your trip, I might ruin it if I come with, I can stay home, it's alright." Kairi grabbed her bags and put them by the front door, meanwhile Sora was grabbing her shoes for her. " Here, your shoes." " Thank you." As she slipped them on he swept her off her feet and gave her a passionate kiss. " You're making it hard for me to leave."
" Just making sure you know what you're coming back home to." Her ride showed up as he set her down. " Hold on a sec!" Sora moved her bags to the car and helped her in. " Kairi, I'll be there waiting for you when you get back. I promise I will always be there for you."
" How can I hurt her? After everything we've been through, I don't want to hurt her."
Sora was conflicted, He didn't want to cause her pain, but he had to tell her he had moved on.
" I'll go over tomorrow and talk to her, explain how things have changed." Sora wandered back to bed and soon fell asleep, not knowing what was to be.
He woke, watching his betrothed lay beside. Riku knew something was going to happen today.
Grabbing his clothes he bathed and dressed. " Honey? Are you in the bathroom?" " Yeah Adrian, just got done in the shower, there's still hot water for you."
She wandered in and stripped quietly.
" Something wrong?" " I feel so bad for her Riku, she has no idea." He grabbed his shoes and sat on the bed. " I know, but as I said we are not getting involved, this is their fight." " I know, but we don't know what she'll do once she finds out. She might get violent."
" I doubt that, she has never been violent towards us." " Just make sure if something does happen you step in, no one needs to get hurt."
As he zipped his pants he wondered what they would do, whether Kairi would cry and try something drastic or Sora would make things right with her.
He prayed for the latter.
Kairi stirred when the light spilled in from the open windows, as her eyes opened her heart ached as the place next to her was empty and cold.
She sat up and gazed around the room, so many happy memories had taken place in that room, yet now the happiness had faded from her leaving a feeling of sorrow and hollowness.
As she stripped the clothes from yesterday off a picture caught her eye.
She held it up, Sora was so uppity that day Riku barely managed to take the photo, he had taken it when he wasn't looking.
She set it back down and tears began to flow, she pulled a simple pink and white sun dress from the closet and slipped it on, and as she did the doorbell rung out.
Kairi wiped the tears away and went to the little jewelry box Sora had made her for her birthday last year, and lifted from it the necklace he gave her when they were younger.
The heart shaped silver pendent shone in the light, she opened it to show a picture of them together, that was the day he said I love you. " Kairi? We need to talk, please open the door."
She waved her hand and the door opened, revealing a tired looking Sora.
" Kairi." " Sora." He came inside and sat down.
" I'm sorry I wasn't there to get you, I was busy at the time." She kept her back turned to him, only turning her head ever so slightly. " Doing what? You promised you would be there when I came back. Riku said some things have changed for you, please tell me."
" Kairi, I fell in love." She turned to face him, tears streaming down her cheeks. " I didn't plan for it to happen, it just did. I know it was mean of me to do, but I was lonely and upset. She came into my life and everything just changed, I can't explain how it happened, she showed up out of nowhere and wandered into my life, it's never been the same for me since then. Day by day, week by week, i began to fall in love with her." " Sora, I don't know what to say. After everything we've been through, everything we've fought for." He reached for her hand.
" I know." Kairi pulled her hand away from him. " I'm sorry Kairi, please believe me. If there was any way to fix this I would do it." " Leave her then."
" I can't, I love Michelle too much to hurt her." " So your saying you never loved me, that giving myself to you and only you was nothing, that spending everyday with you was not enough?"
" Kairi, that's not what I meant."
She stepped back away from him. " No, I see now what you meant. Sora we are through!" She raced for her room and slammed the door and locked it. She could hear him pounding on the door. " Kairi?! Open the door, I didn't mean it like that! Let me in!" She hid in the closet, sinking to the floor and curling up. " Please...let me in.
I need to find a better way of explaining it."
An hour had gone by and still he tried to get her to open the door. " Come on, just let me in."
She didn't move an inch. Sora's phone started going off. " Hello? No, I'm at her place, she locked herself in the closet. Fine, I tried, she took it the wrong way like I thought she would."
He slammed his phone shut and walked away. " I'm leaving now Kairi! You can leave the closet now!" As he slammed the door she started to cry again. " Why Sora, why?"
It was dark by the time she came out, she dried her eyes and wandered into the kitchen, a familiar face was at her table with two cups of coffee. " Here, I thought you might need this." Kairi sat across from Riku and sipped the warm brew. " I heard about what happened, he said you didn't take it the right way."
" I gave him everything, he said if he could do anything to fix it he would. I asked him to leave her, he said he loved her too much to hurt her. Riku, I gave him my heart body and soul. He walked all over me like I was nothing."
" I know, I talked to him about it. I made him see your side of it, he feels bad about how it went today."
She finished her cup and set it in the sink. " I don't know that I'll ever forgive him."
" Don't say that, it hurts now, but in time it will fade and you will move on. I know it."
