I woke up it was 7. I waited till 11, just to figure out that no one would call.
I think I've got a lot of friends but I don't hear from them. What's another night all alone?
When you're spending everyday on your own... And here it goes,

Hunter entered the class. It was mostly empty did no one really want to take this class? He did not believe he could see the future but it may be fun to learn about it. He took his seat and started to work on the homework given to him since it looked like he'll have time. "Lets see I'm a Pisces and an Ox..." He opened up his books to see the meaning of them.

I'm just a kid and life is a nightmare. I'm just a kid, I know that it's not fair.
Nobody cares, cause I'm alone and the world is having more fun than me tonight.

What the f*ck is wrong with me? Don't fit in with anybody. How did this happen to me?
Wide awake I'm bored and I can't fall asleep, and every night is the worst night ever.

'Two halves are equal, a cross between two evils.

Drusilla entered the classroom in a daze. She was quite late, she was certain of it. Where did the time go? She'd been so caught up in her cards and runes that she'd completely lost track of it... or perhaps she'd simply stared off into space for a couple of hours. Both were equally possible, after all. She smiled at the young man present, and frowned. There was supposed to be another, wasn't there? Another boy... She blinked, then offered another smile. She really was out of it today, wasn't she? "Hello, ducky dear, and welcome to Divination one. I am Professor Somerset. Now then, in this class, you will need to have an open mind, open eyes, and patience. Divination is a powerful art, but difficult. Also, there will be no disrespecting of my craft, or of the abilities of fellow students... now then! With that unpleasantness out of the way, we can begin." She paused, giving the young man a moment to absorb her words before beginning the official lecture. "Divination is an old art, practiced by Magic folk and Muggles alike; though of course, they rarely read the signs correctly, they lack the ability to do so, usually. But you, my young one, can be taught to read the signs and to predict the future. I say predict because, of course, time is a fluid, ever changing thing. Every time you are faced with a choice, you could change the events that were to transpire. And everything is important; choosing something different for lunch; going to bed an hour earlier than usual; even stopping for one second on your way to a lesson to gaze out the window can set and entirely new wave of things in motion than would have had you gone about the usual path. And so, nothing is certain. But, we can always look. We can always search. In the future, we see signs, hints of things to come. Whether or not they are to be is largely up to us. Seeing is the first step." She stopped then, curious. She had, of course, seen this play out, but in different ways each time... how would it happen then?

The Seer's eyes glazed, and she shifted a bit, her head tilting in an odd manner, rather like a bird's, her eyes unblinking and unseeing. After a moment, she gave her head a light shake, and smiled again.
"Where was I? Oh, yes. Searching. Divination is, first and foremost, the art of searching... for the future, for the answer, for the key. And now, I'll have an answer from you, ducky. What, to you, is Divination, and what purpose does it serve?" She waited patiently, eager for his answer. It would tell her much about him... but didn't she already know? Sometimes she forgot...

                                                          ═════════════════════════════════
'But if you listen, you learn to hear the difference
Between the haves and the have-nots.''

Lesson One: What is Divination?

User Image

          The Definition of Divination:
              • Divination is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of an occultic, standardized process or ritual. Used in various forms throughout history, diviners ascertain their interpretations of how a querent should proceed by reading signs, events, or omens, or through alleged contact with a supernatural agency.

          The Categories of Divination:
              • An omen (also called portent or presage) is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. Though the word "omen" is usually devoid of reference to the change's nature, hence being possibly either "good" or "bad," the term is more often used in a foreboding sense, as with the word "ominous". The origin of the word is unknown, although it may be connected with the Latin word audire, meaning "to hear."
              • Cleromancy is a form of divination using sortition, casting of lots, or casting bones or stones, in which an outcome is determined by means that normally would be considered random, such as the rolling of dice, but are sometimes believed to reveal the will of God, or other supernatural entities.
              • Augury ranks a set of given possibilities. It can be qualitative (such as shapes, proximities, etc.): for example, dowsing (a form of rhabdomancy) developed from this type of divination. Augury is normally considered to specifically refer to divination by studying the flight patterns of birds.
              • Spontaneous. An unconstrained form of divination, free from any particular medium, and actually a generalization of all types of divination. The answer comes from whatever object the diviner happens to see or hear. Some religions use a form of bibliomancy: they ask a question, riffle the pages of their holy book, and take as their answer the first passage their eyes light upon. Other forms of spontaneous divination include reading auras and New Age methods of feng shui such as "intuitive" and "fuzion"

          The Purpose of Divnination:
Divination is a means to attempt some form of understanding of events to come. The true purpose of this form of magic is hard to say. It is used by some to plan their day to day activities, and by some to attempt circumventing or ensuring that certain things come to pass. It is a fluid magic and is not understood by many who do not have either the Sight nor the patience to learn to See. In this lesson, you will be taught the methods for Seeing, but in order to be successful, you must believe, and put in a fair amount of effort. It will come easier for some than others; any among you might be a Seer, blind to your talents due to lack of practice. For others, visions and signs will be difficult to see. This is natural, and all it means is that you must try harder.

Homework: Do some research and write a short essay on one method of Divination we'll study this year.

OOC:

If you are quoted, your student is registered for this lesson. If he or she does not attend at least one class, your house will be docked ten points at the end of the term. This is waived if you are listed as absent.

She scowled for a moment, shoved the visions away, and smiled widely again at her students before launching into the lecture. "Divination is an old art, practiced by Magic folk and Muggles alike; though of course, they rarely read the signs correctly, they lack the ability to do so, usually. "The violin plays a soft melody,
as my mind starts to feel ease.
Let the music wash over my soul,
make my mind pure and whole.
Let me be renewed."

Victor tilted his head as he walked up the stairway to the Divination classroom. Out of all the extra classes he had signed up for, this one was the one he was most interested in seeing.

...Healing was going to be fun as well, but that would be for later.

When Victor entered the classroom, he blinked as he wondered if his vision had left him. That was when he realized the room was just...dim. Well...dark really. Good thing there were candles dotted around. Taking a seat at a table he glanced at the lace cloth covering them, that...that appealed to him.

Looking up he smiled as the professor started the class.

Professor Somerset? That was an interesting name....why did she call them ducks? ....The wizarding world was weird. When told about the ancient art of Divination, Victor's face fell at the mention of how muggles did it wrong. That...That was a blow to him, he did it all the time after all.

Victor was confused at the sudden far away look the professor sometimes had, was...was she seeing the future? That...That was so cool! Would he be able to see the future like that? He had so many questions, but decided to answer the question they were asked instead, "Ah...Bonjour Professor Somerset." He began with a polite greeting, "To me...Divination is ze art of seeing what possibilities can lie before you. I...Personally also liked ze concept of just seeing into ze future!" He sighed happily, "It is....très bien, oui?"

Was...was that too forward? He hoped it wasn't...was it?

I feel excited you know?
My inner thoughts are, "Divination....This is going to be so great!"
I'm in the house of Hufflepuff.
I am a proud third year

I have screamed until my veins collapsed
I've waited as my time's elapsed

Now, all I do is live with so much hate
I've wished for this, I've bitched at that
I've left behind this little fact:

You cannot kill what you did not create
I've gotta say what I've gotta say
And then I swear I'll go away

But I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise.

Dmitri had nestled the textbook under the fat of his arm and nearly tangled under the extra fabric of his school robes; his rucksack hung off his shoulder and it wiggled back and forth in midair. He groaned, the ire resonated in his voice while pale fingers tightened against the rope ladder and he heaved himself up into the classroom. Fire, it alit his eyes with a sense of fear, a small fear, however, in comparison to the deepest demons that lurked. But he’d seen his older brother gotten burned once, and maybe it was Dmitri’s fault. It only made it worse.

The sensation flooded his flared nostrils and disappeared with a deep breath. It was candles, there were candles everywhere in this school. But it was suffocating, it seemed to illuminate the classroom with a haze of memories that he’d thought been hidden in the shadows forever. How foolish, he sighed. But claimed a desk all to himself in the center row, the only other seat beside him at his desk was occupied by his textbooks followed by the flop of his school robes.

The professor spoke, and Dmitri blinked. So she was a nutter, too, huh? Not that that was a bad thing, he noted with a wily smile. It would make lessons certainly interesting. He fiddled with his feathered quill almost impatiently, curious eyes darted to the French Hufflepuff as the professor’s voice trailed off and her eyes glazed over. She was distant. His attention was too. He flicked the end of his feather on his desk until it tapped.

Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. ”Uhh…Ne znayu?” Dmitri blinked. Was it his turn now? ”Ehh, do not know…I am curious to learn...” Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.

Still relatively early, Nora entered the classroom quietly, feeling the strange air of the room pool in her lungs as she took a deep breath in. She had scampered up with ease, book bag slung across her body for efficiency, but once she had nimbly righted herself at the entrance of the classroom, the air was much thicker and much, much darker. Candles made the air seem to shimmer, and made Nora's unruly hair seem to glow an even more aggressive shade of orange. With a furrowed brow she pulled it up into a messy bun at the back of her head, out of the way and marginally out of sight.

Clambering over to an empty table, Nora perched herself on one of the plush chairs as the rest of the students made their way to tables and chairs before class was started by the instructor. As she babbled, Nora smiled slightly, finding the chatter confusing but oddly fitting and endearing for a divination teacher. Once the professor and finished her speech, the class began answering her final question one by one - what was the meaning of divination? Nora pursed her mouth for a moment, waiting for a quiet moment to add her thoughts. She quickly glanced around the room, checking that she wasn't going to be talking over anyone. "Well, I see divination as a way for a wizard to prepare themselves, no matter what they see." Nora mused, tugging on a loose tendril of hair as she went quiet, waiting for other students added their opinions to the mix.

Quartets of crickets chime in for the chorus
If I were to strum on your heartstrings, would you strum on mine?

The pink-haired Hufflepuff amused Gypsy; he was... bright. Always sunny. She didn't remember if she'd ever spoken to him (although she'd certainly wanted to, ever since he'd dyed his hair... people had bonded over lesser things in the past), but there was no time like the present. She offered a smile to her other classmates, thankful that certain people had not chosen to take the class... and unsurprised as well. Divination wouldn't appeal to certain personalities... she, however, found it fascinating. And, the professor seemed totally eccentric, which only added to the appeal of the class. Gypsy leaned back in her chair, smirking as she listened to her fellow students responses. She thought Victor had hit the nail on the head, really. Possibilities... "Question, Professor... are you just practiced in the art of Divination, or are you a legit Seer?" The Ravenclaw would bet her wand Professor Somerset was a Seer; the way the was suddenly distracted by nothing when she spoke said as much. Learning to See from a Seer... Gypsy couldn't imagine how amazing that would be.

Jess Walsh
Hufflepuff Third Year
Halfblood Twin

Jess wasn't really sure what to expect from this class. Divinations was supposed to be really freaky and mystical, right? Her mum thought it was a load of nonsense, but whatever. This should be interesting, to say the least. The professor seemed really distant, like she was talking from far away. Maybe she was an actual seer! "To me, it's a chance to see the future and how things could play out, not how they will." she answered.

I don't patronize, I realize
I'm losing and this is my real life
I am half asleep, and I am wide awake
This habit is always so hard to break
I don't want to be the bad guy
I've been blaming myself and I think you know why
I'm counting time, and time's counting you
Every way that I do

Toby was pretty sure he was only taking this class because his twin and Gypsy was. The professor came off as a weirdo, but at least she seemed like a nice enough weirdo- he doubted she was very strict. "To me it's just like seeing regular stuff, I guess... but it's stuff that hasn't happened yet and might not anyways. It's more like a general idea of what's to come?" He phrased it openly; almost like a question.

I just can't decide what I'm running from.

Did you say "please just follow me?"
I thought you wanted me
'Cause I want you all to myself
I can try to suck it up
I just can't suck it up
Make me feel like someone else
Please just follow me
I thought you wanted me

The boy with the pink hair in particular seemed to be intrigued. She flashed him a particularly wide grin, listening as each of the students but one answered her question; the one who hadn't, asked a question of her own instead. Drusilla was pleased that the young girl had thought to ask; it was always something students wondered, but so few ever asked... "Those are excellent answers... even the one that was not an answer," she said, her eyes twinkling as she looked at Dmitri. She then turned to Gypsy. "And yes, ducky, I am a 'legit' Seer, as you put it. So if I seem to drift for a moment, don't worry. I'm not crazy," she told the girl with a giggle. "Although, if I seem to drift off for more than a couple minutes, perhaps someone should give me a shake? I'd hate to waste classtime," she informed them, nodding as she said it. That would be good; if they knew to shake her, no one should have trouble doing so, right? "Hm... we're missing a few still, aren't we? Ah, well. We shall have a good class without them, yes? So... why don't you each tell me why you're taking this class? Give me an idea of what you'd like to learn, what you expect..." She blinked then. She already knew what they would say; or, she thought she did. But if she didn't ask, they'd never say it... so she needed to ask, right?

(( OOC: ))
Since the start of term is sort of busy, you've got another week to post in the first lesson! Please make time to post once so you won't lose house points at the end of term!

"The violin plays a soft melody,
as my mind starts to feel ease.
Let the music wash over my soul,
make my mind pure and whole.
Let me be renewed."

Victor listened very carefully as the other students responded to the question, it was quite an interesting start to the class for sure. His thoughts drifted to the girl next to him who asked if the...professor was...a legit seer. Victor blinked, wouldn't the answer be yes? It would be hard to teach divination after all if you couldn't actually do it....right?

Or were there fakes? ....Hmm...

When the professor grinned at him he blinked some, did...did he say something wrong? He hoped he didn't! Maybe he did say too much? Ah~ What a way to start class.

They would need to shake the professor? So...every time she paused she WAS actually seeing the future? That was so cool! He honestly did wonder what it was like, though to be shaken if it's too long...that would be inconvenient at times wouldn't it? Shaking his head he listened as the professor asked another question and he smiled, "I'm taking zis class because I've always had a fascination with ze subject." He then paused, "Zough it was frowned upon....but..." He then nodded, "I'd like to learn ze proper way to divine answers and such~"

Unless only true seers could actually divine the future? ...Hmm...The wizarding world was strange indeed.

I feel excited you know?
My inner thoughts are, "Do you have to be born with the gift of sight? So many questions~"
I'm in the house of Hufflepuff.
I am a proud third year
My puppeteer says "Haah~ Forgot to update my picture post for the year. 8D; " Out of character.

I'm fly, the original
I'm sly, unpredictable
I'm nearly irresistible
And I don't even try
I'm easily excitable
Completely undeniable
And sometimes unreliable
Don't ask me why

Jess' eyes lit up. So she was a real Seer! She wished she had that ability, it must be amazing to see the future, right? Though maybe a bit freaky as well. She was intrigued, to say the least. "I'm taking it because I wish I could be a Seer," she answered honestly. "It's just all so... strange and awesome."

They can't rain on my parade, I'm sunshine on a cloudy day!

I'm strange, and I like it
That's just the way I am
I can't change, I can't hide it
That's just the way I am
From a whisper to a shout
On what the buzz is all about
Everybody's buggin' out
And I've only just begun

I don't patronize, I realize
I'm losing and this is my real life
I am half asleep, and I am wide awake
This habit is always so hard to break
I don't want to be the bad guy
I've been blaming myself and I think you know why
I'm counting time, and time's counting you
Every way that I do

Toby considered the professor's question. He was taking this class because Jess had talked him into it, but he couldn't say that, now could he? "I want to learn more about Divination," he answered, which was sort of true. He didn't really know how it worked.

I just can't decide what I'm running from.

Did you say "please just follow me?"
I thought you wanted me
'Cause I want you all to myself
I can try to suck it up
I just can't suck it up
Make me feel like someone else
Please just follow me
I thought you wanted me

I have screamed until my veins collapsed
I've waited as my time's elapsed

Now, all I do is live with so much hate
I've wished for this, I've bitched at that
I've left behind this little fact:

You cannot kill what you did not create
I've gotta say what I've gotta say
And then I swear I'll go away

But I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise.

”I 'ave always been curious in how practices work; eeehh, the crystal gazing and fire omens...” Dmitri shrugged. It was the truth of it, anyway. He might not attend every class, but a few might hold his interest, anyway. He ruffled his hair and glanced around the room. At least he held substance, right? Even if he was a little fearful of fire, and the dark shadows that knew a little too much more than they should.
