This is just an introduction to Genres of anime Newbies will come across!

1. What is Anime?

Anime is Japanese for Animation or to explain people "Japanese Cartoons"

2 What is Manga?

Manga is Japanese versions of Comics / Graphic novels

Japanese Manga also read from right to Left
instead of the traditional left to right
Manga,so you start from the back of the book to the front

3. Anime and Manga Have Genres, Here is the list!


1. Shōnen, shonen, or shounen manga (少年漫画 shōnen manga?) is manga aimed at a young male audience. It appeals to a large age group, though its primary audience is under the age of fourteen.

2. Shōjo, shojo, or shoujo manga (少女漫画 shōjo manga?) is manga aimed at a teenage female readership. The name romanizes the Japanese 少女 (shōjo), literally "young girl". Shōjo manga covers many subjects in a variety of narrative and graphic styles, from historical drama to science fiction — often with a strong focus on human and romantic relationships and emotions.

3. Action
A work typically depicting fighting, violence, chaos, and fast paced motion.

4. Adventure
Topically involves the main character(s) going on a trip

5. Psychological
Usually deals with the philosophy of a state of mind, in most cases detailing abnormal psychology.

6.Comedy
A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict

7. School Life
Having a major setting of the story deal with some type of school.

8. Slice of life
As the name suggests, this genre represents day-to-day tribulations of one/many character(s). These challenges/events could technically happen in real life and are often -if not all the time- set in the present timeline in a world that mirrors our own.

9. Fantasy
Anything that involves, but not limited to, magic, dream world, and fairy tales.

10. Sci-fi
Short for science fiction, these works involve twists on technology and other science related phenomena which are contrary or stretches of the modern day scientific world.

11.Drama
A work meant to bring on an emotional response, such as instilling sadness or tension.


12. Romance
Any love related story. We will define love as between man and woman in this case. Other than that, it is up to your own imagination of what love is.


13. Historical
Having to do with old or ancient times.

14.Mystery
Usually an unexplained event occurs, and the main protagonist attempts to find out what caused it.


15.Horror
A painful emotion of fear, dread, and abhorrence; a shuddering with terror and detestation; the feeling inspired by something frightful and shocking


16. Western Litrature
as the title suggests , based on western literature like alice in wonder land, Romeo x Juliet, pandora hearts etc..

17.Sports
As the name suggests, anything sports related. Baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, golf, and racing just to name a few.

18. Supernatural
Usually entails amazing and unexplained powers or events which defy the laws of physics.

19. Tragedy
Contains events resulting in great loss and misfortune.

20. Martial Arts
As the name suggests, anything martial arts related. Any of several arts of combat or self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, kendo, fencing, and so on

21.One Shot: It only contains one chapter for that story line.

22. Magical Girl
Magical girls (魔法少女 mahō shōjo?, also known as mahou shoujo or majokko) is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy anime and manga which feature girls who use magic.

23 Magic
Having magical supernatural powers

24. Mecha
A work involving and usually concentrating on all types of large robotic machines.

25. Seinen
Seinen means "young Man." Manga and anime that specifically targets young adult males around the ages of 18 to 25 are seinen titles. The stories in seinen works appeal to university students and those in the working world. Typically the story lines deal with the issues of adulthood.

26.Gender Bender
Girls dressing up as guys, guys dressing up as girls.. Guys turning into girls, girls turning into guys.. I think you get the picture. Crossdressing

27. Cooking
A cooking manga involves food, restaurant industry etc...

28. Isekai - (in another world anime)
Any MC traveling, reincarnated, ,Transported or summoned to a different world (can be digital or nondigital worlds)

29.. Harem
A series involving one male character and many female characters (usually attracted to the male character). A Reverse Harem is when the genders are reversed.

31. Adult
Contains content that is suitable only for adults. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.

32. 18+ Shoujo Ai
Often synonymous with yuri, this can be thought of as somewhat less extreme. "Girl's Love", so to speak.

33. 18+ Shounen Ai
Often synonymous with yaoi, this can be thought of as somewhat less extreme. "Boy's Love", so to speak.

34. Smut
Deals with series that are considered profane or offensive, particularly with regards to sexual content

35. Josei
Literally "Woman". Targets women 18-30. Female equivalent to seinen. Unlike shoujo the romance is more realistic and less idealized. The storytelling is more explicit and mature.

36. Mature
Contains subject matter which may be too extreme for people under the age of 17+. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

37. 18+ Yaoi
This work usually involves intimate/ sexual relationships between men.

38. 18+ Yuri
This work usually involves intimate/ sexual relationships between women.

39. Ecchi (unsensored)
It's a genere in japanese anime and manga that reffers to erotic but not abruptly sexual content.

40. Lolicon
Representing a sexual attraction to young or under-age girls.

41. Shotacon
Representing a sexual attraction to young or under-age boys.

42. 18 + Gender Bender / Transgender
Girls dressing up as guys, guys dressing up as girls.. Guys turning into girls, girls turning into guys.. I think you get the picture. can get sexual if 17+

43. Harem (unsensered)
A series involving one male character and many female characters (usually attracted to the male character). A Reverse Harem is when the genders are reversed.

44. Hentai (Rated R)
Extreme Adult sexual content in an illustrated form where the FOCUS of the manga /anime is placed on sexually graphic acts.

45. Dōjinshi (同人誌?, often transliterated as doujinshi) is the Japanese term for self-published works, usually magazines, manga or novels. Dōjinshi are often the work of amateurs, though some professional artists participate as a way to publish material outside the regular industry. and can carry catagory as Harem ,Mecha Yuri,Yaoi etc...

46. Bara (薔薇?, "rose"), also known as the wasei-eigo construction "Men's Love" (メンズラブ menzu rabu?) or ML, is a Japanese jargon term for a genre of art and fictional media that focuses on male same-sex love, usually created by gay men for a gay audience.

47. Bondage
Bondage has come to mean sexual slavery, particularly dealing with the simple practice of restraining one's parter Hentai, Nudity, Yuri,Yaoi

48. Bakunyū (爆乳?)
is a genre of pornographic media focusing on the depiction of women with large breasts.[4] The word can be literally translated to "exploding breasts".[5] With regards to bra size, bakunyū are said to be above a G75 bra size but below an M70.[6] Bakunyū is a subgenre within the genre of hentai anime.

49.Bishōjo (美少女?)
Literally, "pretty girl". Often refers to any young, attractive woman, but also used to imply sexual availability (as in "bishōjo games").
