Hmmm....I'm not certain I have a specific favorite episode or short, so much as a favorite era. I enjoy the original Hanna Barbera (working for MGM at the time) run. It was wild, new, innovative, and that energy carries over to the present. At the time, character driven shorts with escalating violence was still something of a novelty, and you can really see the team finding its footing with these early shorts. Also, the character animation and environments are just gorgeous.
I also enjoy the later Chuck Jones iteration. By this time, Jones had made a name for himself at WB as the cool, experimental guy, and while he wasn't a fan of Tom and Jerry, he still gave it his own spin, and I genuinely respect his work ethic and vision.
As for which of the duo I prefer, I'd have to say Tom. I know he often brings the trouble on himself, but similar to Daffy Duck, his flaws (impatience, arrogance, and short temper) make him a relatable figure. Someone we can all see ourselves in, and simultaneously cheer for and laugh at. Also, his reactions are just golden. I love his expressions.
