‘You know love for a little while; your mother’s warm embrace, fresh milk, tender licks that keep you clean. You don’t hear or see much. There’s just the four of you, mewling and purring, cuddled in the dark.

And then you grow older, you start to walk, you start to see, you start to smell. Blood, you quickly learn, is a smell that will never leave you. And your mother’s warmth grows cold. You are presented to your father, massive, terrifying, his gaze quick and judging, looking for weakness.

Your brothers are clearly favourited, though the rivalry between them is fierce. Everyone knows that only one of them will claim the position as heir and the one who loses will most likely feed the pride. They are pushed by your father, Jioni, who teaches them, and you, how to fight, how to be strong, how to kill.

Inyenyeri’s lessons are different. She teaches cunning, how to get what you want with words and smarts. Her claws, when you don’t pay attention, are quick and sharp. But she’s also often the only thing stopping Jioni from biting you in half when he’s annoyed.

So who are you in all of this?

Are you scared, just trying to get by? Do you enjoy the death you’ve been brought up with? Do you want to compete for heir as well? Will you use brute strength or your mother’s cunning nature? How do you feel about your siblings? Your father, your mother?
