First Aid
Definition of First Aid
First aid is exactly what the words say; The first aid or help given. It is both immediate and temporary and often is the difference between life and death. First aid is the immediate care given and generally needed by anyone who is injured or suddenly ill.
There are two main points to remember in applying first aid:

1. First- Attend at once to the most seriously injured.

2. Second- Speed is absolutely necessary. It can spell the difference between life and death.

Values of First Aid Training

1. Self Help- As a first aider, you should not only be prepared to help others. In case you yourself is hurt, you may instruct someone on how to help you.

2. Help for Others- As a first aider, you are trained to give instructions to promote a reasonable safety attitude and to assist them wisely if they are hurt.

3. Preparation for Disaster- Training is of particular importance in case of catastrophes when medical and hospital services are limited or delayed.

General Directions in Giving First Aid

1. Do not move patient from the position in which he is found

2. Keep crowds away but have capable persons around to help you.

3. Get someone to call help as you give first aid.

4. Check his breathing, or, if he has difficulty in breathing:
a. Loosen his collar, clothing, waistband and belt.
b. Clear his nose, mouth and throat of anything that can block passage of air such as food, dentures, tobacco and chewing gum.
c. Give artificial respiration or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

If the patient is unconscious but breathing normally:
a. Clear his nose, mouth and throat of anything that can again, block the passage of air.
b. Turn him on his side with his head low, but not if he has neck or back injuries.
c. Do not give his water or food.

5. Check his pulse. Then check the heartbeat by placing your ear on the left chest. Is his heart still beating? If not, give his an external chest compression.

6. Stop any bleeding. This is done best by applying direct pressure on the wound.

7. Cover serious wounds or burns with a clean dressing, gauze, cloth or banana leaves.

8. Apply a splint on both sides of broken or dislocated limbs.
