About three months ago, I kinda started a story, but I wasn't terribly motivated. Plus, the middle was going to be too complicated, so I skipped right to the end &.& But I've kinda edited it a little and fixed the end. Originally when I wrote it, I was making hopeful assumptions and such like. But I like reality much better in my fiction (strange as that may sound). Besides, I like to mess with my characters, especially the ones that too much resemble me. They get worst and best case scenarios in every situation. Anyway, these are the characters:
Kiri Hmm...what can I say about the most foolish character in the story? She's a complete insomniac, loyal to the point of obsession, and a total space-case. lol. I find myself hating her, as I hated Gabrielle before. GOD I hated Gabrielle. Anyway, Kiri's pretty much socially-challenged, awkward, and maybe not all there. Also loves her music (but then every character I "create" loves their music in some way). I'd love to punch her in the face ^_^
Aya Got the name from a book (go figure). I hate the character in the book so much, but I like the name, so I'm making a really good character out of her. umm...there's not much to say. She's much less awkward than darling Kiri, but just as preoccupied sometimes. Much of the time. Somewhere between the two. Anyway. She's very pretty, and people notice. Some more than others. Some far too much >.> *coughkiricough*
It's probably worth noting that they both do some really strange things that don't seem to make any sense unless you know what's going on inside their heads. Haha, even then, it's strange.
Mel Oh, the pain in the protagonists' rear comes in now. I almost called her Nickie, but that's too close to Kiri (and hints at Erin, who is only part of the base for this lovely character). Once the story gets going and you really see Aya and Kiri, you'll wonder how they're friends with this girl. She's a little wild. Silly. She's not particularly nosey, but if she knows she doesn't know something, it'll drive her crazy (muhahaha). Not particularly observant, she has been known to notice things that others would not like her to notice. *points to strange things mentioned above* Mel is to Kiri as Victoria is to me. Except Mel is much more observant than Victoria.
So, basically, the basis for the story is Kiri being a psycho-obsessed child. I'm exaggerating, but my goodness, she comes off that way sometimes. Aya is decidedly not oblivious to this, but she also doesn't really do anything about it, either way. Meantime, you have Mel making Kiri's already-difficult life even more difficult. She somehow catches on to a little bit of Kiri's strange behavior around Kiri and realizes that it is strange (and means something). At the same time, she also finds out that Kiri likes someone, though Kiri won't tell who. Nevernevernever. Subconsciously, Mel connects the two, but she doesn't quite realize it. It's rather funny.
********
The bed shook as Kiri restlessly rolled over for what felt like the hundredth time that night. Her insomnia was unrelenting, as it had been night after night, for the last few months. It wasn't the tumolt of emotions coursing through her that was making her toss and turn, though it certainly wasn't helping. No, what was keeping Kiri awake was a face that seemed to be glued to her eyelids. It was always there, it seemed, in her dreams, in her daydreams, and she didn't mind. She loved to see that face, loved to see the smile, the eyes, the every detail she had fixed in her mind. Only in the quiet darkness of the night did the image torment her. If, if, if...
Frustrated, Kiri sat up and flipped her lamp on, blinking in the sudden brightness. She leaned over the edge of her bed, reaching for her puzzle book. It was the only thing that could get her to sleep on such a restless night. As she grasped the book in her hand, she noticed that her photo album had fallen off the shelf. It lay open on the floor. Kiri squinted, trying to see which picture was revealed.
There it was again, that face. But seeing it dimly in a picture was not painful at all. She smiled at it as she pulled her torso back into her bed, but she didn't dwell on the image. She flipped randomly to a page in her book and began to work, hoping mental exhaustion would soon claim her.

So, after that, basically, everything happens (haha, duh). Kiri is taunting Mel a little with the whole "secret crush" thing. Mel sorta has an inkling, but she's not too sure. She keeps telling herself it's some guy, but she's not 100% in her conviction. She almost suspects that it's Aya, but she always dismisses the idea, though it stays. Sr. Prom's coming up, Mel's last time to see Aya and Kiri together (incidentally, Kiri is thinking along the same lines--same person, you know) So Mel, who does yearbook, volunteers to take pictures. Kiri is having increasingly troubled nights and hopes the prom will be an opportunity. She's been keeping her distance from Aya in order to keep a small secret. Ha, more like a very large secret, and Kiri has a very large mouth xD Aya is a little bothered by Kiri being distant, but she's got other things going on in her life that are more important. The prom scene (the end, basically) starts with Kiri and Mel arriving at the dance. Kiri gave her photographer friend a ride ^_^
Mel glanced at the clock before Kiri turned off the engine. A peaceful smile drifted onto Kiri's face as she felt the growling engine hum to a stop beneath her. It was a last bit of comfort before this important night, and she would need all the nerve she could muster.
"Would you like me to leave the two of you alone?" snickered Mel. "We're here early enough; you guys could have a good ten minutes alone." She ducked a swing from Kiri, still laughing. "Chill! I was kidding. Besides, there's still that secret crush of yours." Kiri glared at her. "Oh, you thought I'd forgotten?"
"I had hoped," Kiri responded dryly. Truth was, Kiri had thought Mel wouldn't remember that one slip of the tongue for so long. At least, she thought with some relief, she deosn't know who.
"Well, since we've got a few minutes before the doors open and we must go our separate ways, why don't you tell me all about him?"
"There's nothing to say about him," Kiri answered honestly. "And it's almost time, anyway. Shall we?" Kiri unlocked the doors and pushed hers open. She slipped gracefully from the TBird [[you had to know what she'd be driving an awesome car ^_~]], her long blue dress fluttering out behind her. She waited to make sure Mel had clambered out, with her camera in hand, before locking the car and slamming her door shut. Mel did not look half as nice in her plain black dress, but she was only a photographer. Together they walked to the entrance of the hall the school had rented for the senior prom.
"Wow," Kiri breathed, as she entered the foyer. "It's amazing!" A crystal chandelier [[spelling is EVIL]] hung from the ceiling and cast dazzling rainbows throughout. Kiri's dress seemed to light up in response to the brilliance; it shimmered with color, the silver-blue glitter reflecting the chandelier's rainbows. Kiri did not notice, among the dazzling light, that Mel took a picture of the sparkling girl. It was a few moments before Kiri even noticed the table in front of her, where a teacher sat, patiently waiting.
"Hi, Mrs. Rendrey!" Kiri smiled as she presented her ticket to her english teacher. She signed in quickly as the teacher returned her greeting with a smile. Kiri would miss Mrs. Rendrey, the only english teacher she had ever really liked. She could have stood there all night and talked, but Mel grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her into the darker dance floor. It did not glitter, shimmer, or dazzle, but Kiri liked it all the same. The lighting was perfect: not too dark, not too light. She walked once around the room, taking in all the details, yet not absorbing a single one completely. It was too perfect; she had to be dreaming. But if it were a dream, then other people would already be there.
As if cued, laughter erupted from the foyer. Kiri peered towards the entrance and saw a group of girls she did not know well walk in with their dates. They waved to her, so she waved back. A few moments later, another group walked in. This continued for some time. An hour later, the dance floor was slightly packed, but one group was missing. Kiri waited anxiously near the entrance, dancing but watching, waiting. Mel did not fail to notice this behavior, though Kiri did not notice Mel noticing. She was too intent on her waiting.
Finally, at 10 past 10, they arrived. Kiri felt her breath catch as she caught her first glimpse of Aya. But another girl stepped in the way. Kiri waited impatiently for the other girl to move, noting subconsciously that the girls' dress was a rather lovely shade of purple, a color Kiri was rather partial to. And suddenly, the purple was gone, and Aya's eyes met Kiri's gaze.
Kiri felt her heart stop as her breath left in a rush. Time froze, it seemed to Kiri. There was nothing but silence and Aya for so long, Kiri felt it had been an eternity when one of the boys in the group stepped into her line of sight, breaking the moment. A sudden burst of anger welled up inside her as the boy reached out and replaced a stray lock of Aya's hair back where it belonged, and Aya looked up at him for a moment, smiling. At seeing Aya's smile, though not meant for her, Kiri's anger quickly extinguished, leaving a painful hollow feeling in the pit of her stomach. She turned away and pushed her way into the middle of the dancing masses, desparate to get away.
Aya signed in, perplexed by what had just happened. She kept a happy front up for her friends, but she did not quite understand Kiri's look, nor her reaction. For Aya, too, time had stopped, almost. So strange, she thought. But her friends left her no time to dwell on it. Her date took her hand and guided her after her friends to the dance floor. She forgot about Kiri almost as soon as she started dancing, but she couldn't help noticing that she was dancing precisely where Kiri had been standing.
Not long after, just when Kiri had finally lost her consciousness to the beat of the music and the movement of the bodies around her, dancing on and on without stopping, the music changed. The thrumming bass notes stopped, and the music became softer and slower. Dismay flooded Kiri's mind as the people around her paired off and began to sway, holding each other closely. She carefully wound her way out to the edge of the room. Leaning against the wall, she scanned the crowd. It was a stupid thing to do, she knew that, but she did it anyway. Almost immediately, she caught sight of them. They were directly under one of the colored lights. It was beautiful. She couldn't help herself; tears welled up in her eyes and began to trickle down her face. Surreptitiously, [[damn SPELLING!!!]] she wiped them off.
Her tears did not go entirely unnoticed, as she had hoped. Mel saw Kiri wipe her face and wondered what was wrong. She followed Kiri's gaze, which had not moved, to see Aya and her date, close and swaying under the light. Puzzled, she looked back at Kiri. So, she thought, that boy is the one? That doesn't make any sense at all, but the only other possibility is Aya, and that makes even less sense. She thought of asking Kiri, but thought better of it as she watched her friend cry. Kiri would only get angry if Mel pushed her.
After a long eternity, it seemed to Aya, the song finally ended. The couples broke apart as a faster song started. Aya stepped back from her date, grinning as they caught the infectious beat, but she nearly stopped as she saw Kiri over her date's shoulder. Kiri had finally regained some amount of composure, though not much, and was hurrying to lose herself in the midst of the crowd again, but as she slipped back into the fringes of the dancers, a light swept across her face and made the last of her tears, which she hadn't wiped away yet, glimmer. Aya frowned, confused. Why would she be crying? It wouldn't be because...
"Is something wrong?" Her date's voice broke into her puzzlement. Aya looked up at him and smiled.
"No, nothing. Though...I'm a little winded, to tell the truth. Let's go sit down for a bit." Aya glanced back at where she had last seen Kiri, though she knew Kiri would have moved further into the crowd. Then, she and her date pushed their way out and to a table at the edge of the room.
Mel watched them go. The puzzlement on Aya's face, which was similar to her own, she was sure, seemed to confirm that there was something weird going on with Aya and Kiri. But she didn't have a clue as to what it could be. She sighed, frustrated with all the secrets she didn't know but knew existed, and resumed snapping pictures of dance attendees and chaperones alike.
Kiri tried to lose herself in the music, but it wasn't working. The music was definitely not to her taste, and she was thoroughly distracted by flashes of recent memory: Aya's arrival, the slow dance...It was just too much to block out. There was no other way: she had to do something because nothing else was working. Abruptly, she turned and forced her way out of the crowd to the side of the hall. She walked along the fringe of people, looking for Aya, but she couldn't find her in the crowd. She glanced half-heartedly at the tables, convinced that Aya and her date had moved further into the crowd where she could not find them. It was a great surprise for Kiri to see them sitting at a table. She stood for a moment, stunned at her good luck. She blinked several times to make sure she wasn't just imagining it, but she wasn't. This makes things a little easier, she thought, delighted.

I'm too tired to finish right now. It's nearly 1 AM!! Tomorrow...or later today, rather. *yawns*
~nepie
yay, I got 8 hours of sleep ^_^ I feel very awake now. Also more than a little puzzled. There is seriously something going on here. Too many views, and it isn't me. I'm going to figure this out.
ANYWAY. I'm going to get back to the story now...
**********
Aya looked out towards the dance floor. She and her date had been talking, but it wasn't enough to distract her completely from Kiri's odd behavior. She wanted to go back and dance and lose her thoughts to the music. She turned to see if her date was ready to return, but something caught her eye. She turned back to see Kiri walking hesitantly towards them. Kiri stumbled a little, clumsy as always on high heels. Maybe she's not really coming over here. There's other people over here... Aya turned back to her date, who had started talking again.
"Aya?" Aya nearly jumped out of her skin as a hesitant voice spoke just centimeters away from her ear.
"Oh, Kiri. Hi. What's up?"
"C'mon. I think they're going to play Footloose next, and you need to come." Kiri grabbed Aya's hand and pulled her towards the dance floor.
"Wait, what? Why do I need to come? And what about my date?"
"Is he following? Nope. And you just need to come, 'kay?" Aya just looked at her. They stood on the edge of the crowd. Kiri hadn't released Aya's hand yet. Just as Aya was about to pull her hand back and return to her date, the familiar thrumming started. She looked at Kiri, surprised.
"How did you know?" she asked. Kiri simply smiled and shrugged. Then, she let go of Aya's hand and jumped right into dancing. Aya stood and watched for a moment before she too joined everyone.
It was an exhausting dance for Kiri, but she didn't stop. It was too fun. She was enjoying herself too much. And Aya was right there. If Kiri was right, and she usually was, the DJ would take it down a few notches after this. Perfect.
Finally, the song ended. People stopped, breathing heavily. To everyone's great relief, a slower song started. Aya started to drift back towards her date as everyone else paired off and started to sway, but Kiri grabbed a hold of her hand.
"Aya, um...would you, uh, like to dance?" Kiri turned bright red and looked down at her feet. Aya blinked at her for a moment. Where did this come from? she wondered. Kiri had seemed to avoid her for a while, but now she was doing the exact opposite. But why?
"Um..." Aya glanced over at her date, who was waiting for her. "Kiri...I have a date. I should dance with him." Kiri looked up from her feet. She looked absolutely heartbroken. Oh, hell, Aya thought. "But I've danced with him plenty. Sure, I'd love to dance." Kiri's face instantly lit up. She released Aya's hand and held her hands up, palms facing Aya, who mirrored her. They laced their fingers together and awkwardly started to sway.
Kiri couldn't believe it. She couldn't help smiling. It was more than she had hoped for. She could've lived with a no, but a yes...her heart was racing out of excitement. Aya being that close was like a dream come true, a beautiful, beautiful dream she wished could go on forever and ever and ever and...
Aya was surprised to find herself enjoying the dance. They had relaxed a little, and their swaying was less awkward. She had made Kiri happy, it seemed, and she was glad. It was quite fun, actually, dancing with Kiri. Maybe it would never end...
Mel saw them dancing and stared. They were near each other, and not only that: dancing together. It was too unlikely. She couldn't believe her eyes. She stared forever, it seemed...
Abruptly, the music stopped. The couples broke apart slowly, Aya and Kiri last of all. [[wait...that doesn't make sense...]] A group near the DJ asked him to play another slow song. He obliged, and the couples slipped back together as another slow song started. Aya glanced at her date again. He had sat back down and was rising to come to dance with her.
Kiri saw this too, and without a second thought, she put her arms around Aya's waist. Out of pure habit, Aya put her arms around Kiri's neck, momentarily forgetting she wasn't with her date. Mel's jaw hit the floor. No freakin' way... Shock coursed through Kiri at her own audacity. Similar shock was written all over Aya's face, as she could see, and Mel's face, as she could not see. They stared at each other in shock, unconsciously swaying to the music.

crap. what can I do with that? It's like Sofia kissing Gabby. what can possibly come after that? It's too unexpected. It changes the whole freakin' story gonk Kiri, Kiri, Kiri. *sigh* If I wasn't 100x's more cautious than her...but that's the point, isn't it? Fictional characters do the stuff most people would be too afraid to do or don't have the opportunity to do. It's all perfect for them. They either get the total win, or they get the epic fail. I think Kiri's heading for the epic fail. Kiri's big mouth + Aya's "date" = epic fail for Kiri.
Actually, I wanted Kiri to fail from the beginning. She can live pieces of my dreams, but she can't live her own.
HO LY CRAAAAAAP!!!! I have inspiration to finish this!!!!! <3 go me!!! Actually, Kiri is not going to get the epic fail. why? Because I'd feel really sorry for her if she went as far as she has gone so far and fell flat on her face. Also because Aya wouldn't be so mean :3
not that Kiri is getting what she wants. She knows damn well that she can't have what she wants, not completely. But she can have part of it. I'll give her that much.
*********
"Kiri....I...wha...you..." Aya struggled to find the words to say what she needed to say. She could feel her date's eyes on her back. She didn't want to hurt Kiri's feelings, but she couldn't admit that it was pleasant to be dancing with her, to be near her. She had her date to consider, after all.
"You won't hurt my feelings, Aya-chan," Kiri whispered in her ear, as if reading her mind. "I know you have your......date. I understand. But also..." Here, Kiri hesitated, unsure. She had been waiting for over a year to tell Aya. So long to keep it in, she reflected.
"What?" Aya's eyes burned with incurable curiousity. Kiri had to smile at that. That intense curiousity was one of the things she liked about Aya. Kiri wanted to quench that curiousity. She owed her an answer.
"I....I'm in love with you, Aya." Kiri looked into Aya's eyes, judging her reaction, her own eyes shining with a light previously hidden. "I'm in love with you, and I want to be with you, and....and I....." She hesitated, reading the shock in Aya's eyes clearly. "I'm sorry," Kiri mumbled. With that, she dropped her arms and pulled herself away from Aya easily. Then, she turned and ran out of the hall.
Aya stood in shock and watched Kiri leave. Suddenly, she came to her senses. Kiri was leaving, and she wasn't going to come back. "Kiri, wait!" she yelled, running after her dear friend.
Mel stood, jaw gaping, watching as Kiri's expression changed from shock to joy to gut-wrenching, hollow pain. She watched as Aya yelled for Kiri to wait and ran after her. She watched as the few people who hadn't stopped dancing to watch the two dancing turned at Aya's call. It was Aya. It had been Aya all along. Kiri liked Aya. No freakin' way, she thought, even as her eyes proved it to be true.
Kiri stumbled on her high heels, nearly falling as she ran to her car. Luckily, her purse had been near the entrance. She'd had time to grab it. She hadn't heard Aya call to her. Everything she had was focused on getting away. Kiri cried out as she tripped and fell hard against the trunk of her beloved TBird. She crumpled against it, winded, sobs escaping her lips brokenly and painfully. Her pain was all-consuming; she didn't notice Aya run up to her with a look of concern on her face. She did notice when Aya helped her stand up then hugged Kiri tightly. It was more than Kiri could stand. She completely broke down, crying and sobbing on Aya's shoulder.
"There, there, Kiri. It's okay. It's really okay," Aya whispered soothingly. Eventually, Kiri calmed down enough to pull herself together. She took a step back from Aya.
