Pay the Piper
Ok, I finished this book, Pay the Piper: A Rock 'N' Roll Fairy Tale by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple last Sunday night, but have procrastinated writing about it due to time restraints and other priorities thank ranked about this. But here it goes, finally!
It is a modern version of the story we all probably grow up hearing about the pied piper that comes to town and leads all the rats away and when he doesn't get paid, he comes back to lead all the children away (or some variation of this story). This book is written is easy language, so it goes very fast and is perfect for any teen or pre-teen that likes to read.
If you plan to read this book, do NOT read this next part. The story is basically about a Fairy that got banished and is required to pay a tithe every seven years in silver and gold, and if he doesn't have that, it is to be souls. So over hundreds of years, the musically talented fairy puts together his own rock and roll band. He struggles just to keep up with the cost of living so when he falls short of his required tithe, he uses his music to bespell and lead the children of any given town away to "Faerie." But in this small town, the night before Halloween, the band plays for an audience that holds a young, school newspaper reporter. As she follows the trail of the piper to rescue her younger brother, she learns of the curse put upon the fairy. Using the stories she had heard growing up from her Granny, she figures there must be a way out of the curse, which eventually she figures out just in the nick of time to save the day.
