The Goth Mindset [Public] |

Naturally being part of the subculture does come with a mindset. It may however vary from individual to individual but, there is a common first one that comes right after we realize we're into goth albeit, knowing what it is or not. That first mindset is the desire to express our individuality and what we're into which is going against the norm.
Being goth means being darkly inclined. We have an obvious appreciation for the darker aspects of life, both physical and metaphorical. That is the literal definition for both goth and darkly inclined. The term 'darkly inclined' however is associated with negative stigma due to "goth Karens." You can read all about that here if you were unaware. [x]
There is more to goth than there appears to be on the outside. We are mostly a group of like minded individuals who want to express ourselves freely without ridicule. We celebrate what it is that we love just like anyone else does with what they like. We are no different in that regard.
As mentioned above, a natural part that comes with goth is wanting to go against the norm. Not necessarily to rebel against society as we see that as more or less pointless when we grow older. The baby bats may however want to get into a rebellious phase with it which is completely normal and understandable. At that age they are realizing more and more how ******** things are and they want to stand against it, be it just their parents or others giving them a hard time.
Being a delinquent is not what the goth community represents as some may misconstrued it to be. More often times than not, we simply just don't care for what's mainstream be it music, fashion or other. Still to this day I detest pop music with every fiber of my being lol. Rejecting or simply not partaking in the norm is often a big part of the mindset. Sure we can like whatever we want still, but still, many things we can't stand.
Is there such thing as "being less goth" or "being a better goth"? No, no one does it better necessarily. That's like asking, 'do you like this more than the other person likes this?' That's simply not how it works.
What about when someone is toxic and has gross mindsets, are they still a true goth then? Being toxic does not change what someone's interest are so no. However, if they are claiming things that don't actually represent our subculture and that are actually harmful, then they are simply fraudulent and should be avoided regardless of them having similar interests.

What is the mindset in my own opinion and do we share the same views? The mindset is what I've already stated. Yearning for freedom of expression, expressing what we love by the music we listen to, how we dress and what we surround ourselves with. Not liking many mainstream things is a small part of it to a degree. A very minor example is simply thinking, 'hey I'd like to see all these things in black rather than in all these bright colors. ;D' We like the unusual, we appreciate it and are it to a degree, of course in an interesting way.
As for views, those for sure can vary. I for one am anti-religious meaning the way I see it is, religion is nothing but corruption and control but that view is not the same for the entire subculture. My sis who's also goth is christian. Goths can be of any religion or of any political spectrum. Though in my experience, most goths tend to be nonreligious and very laid back when it comes to politics.
The majority of us are not any sort of extremist, are relatively peaceful and stand for justice rather than ********. That is a mindset that does represent our subculture in my opinion. We've all experienced injustices in our lives and not just for being goth / alternative in whatever way. That being said, it gives us a strong since of justice and for us elder goths, we know how to identify red flags near instantly.

Now I'd like to hear from the community. What do you guys think the goth mindset is? Feel free to comment here, PM/DM me or post in the thread and I will add it all here with your usernames.
