I don't believe in the Jesus stuff, so for me, Christmas is not a religious celebration. I love eating turkey and beetroot salad, but that's not the point of the celebration. Giving and receiving presents is nice, too, but Christmas is not about that either. For me, Christmas is all about being together with the ones I love.
I always start the preparations early. I just want to make sure that I'll have enough time to put into each present and card. I don't want to run in the stores a day before Christmas, trying to find something when they've already ran out of everything. The presents and cards represent my feelings towards the receiver. Nothing less than perfect will do. I won't give my dear ones something halfbaked. Cards are definitely made by yours truly because I couldn't bare the thought of giving my dear ones something they could get from others, too.
We have a few traditions for Christmas. Firstly, I spend every other Christmas at dad's and every other at mum's (yeah, they're divorced). Each Christmas is wonderful anyway, no matter where I spend it. The second tradition is a Finnish one. We open the presents in the evening of the 24th. I've got the impression that in many countries, presents are opened on the 25th, but here it's the 24th. The third one is our family's own tradition. On the 25th, me, mum, my brothers, my aunt and her family visit our granny. We eat, talk about presents and holiday plans and everything related to the season. If I spend Christmas at mum's, I'll go visit dad after the 25th. If I spend Christmas at dad's, I'll go visit mum. After that, I'll try to meet friends during the holidays.
The 24th usually proceeds along the same old form. In the morning, we eat rice porrige. There's only one almond hidden in it and there's always competition for it. The one who gets it will become lucky...or so they say. After the breakfast, we play and decorate the Christmas tree. In the afternoon, we stuff ourselves with turkey, ham and salad. After that it's playing again...mostly old board games. In the evenening, we bring in the presents, give them to each other and open 'em. Then it's pretty much just talking about the presents and testing them, thanking others and just being together.
The best things about Christmas...there are many. I love giving presents. Watching the snow outside the window from a candlelit room is wonderful. I can't wait eating, talking and playing together with my family.
