Chapter Three: Scorpius Malfoy and the Train
Albus glanced over his shoulder out the window of the carriage door as farms whizzed past then sighed and looked around for his brother. James had seemed to run off for his friends not wanting anything to do with his two year younger brother. Albus looked out of place and felt it too, jealous of the fact that James had had two years of Hogwarts experience under his belt while he, Albus, had none. He wandered down the corridor of the train and finally spotted someone sitting in a compartment alone. He knocked on the door and slid it open slightly, “Mind if I sit with you?” The boy looked up with his silver eyes and nodded slightly, “Sure, you’re one of Harry Potter’s kids aren’t you?” Albus looked a little shocked, “Yeah. I’m Albus but everyone calls me Al.” The boy extended his own hand, “Scorpius Malfoy. Your father saved my father’s life a long time ago. Father pointed him out before we got on the train.” “Really?” Albus shook Scorpius’s hand, “He never told us about it. Uncle Ron didn’t seem to like your dad too much though.” “Well Father said that your father’s friends didn’t really want to save them but your father insisted. Father said that the Potter’s weren’t a bad family.” Scorpius smiled, “It’s nice to meet someone whose family is like that.” Albus blushed slightly at that and finally released Scorpius’s hand deciding to turn the conversation to something else, “so what House do you want to be in at Hogwarts?” “Well my entire family has been in Slytherin so I guess I’d like to go there.” Scorpius ran his hands through his white-blonde hair smoothing it back again afterwards, “what about you?” “Well my older brother, James, is a Gryffindor and both of my parents were too but I think Slytherin doesn’t sound that bad if Dad thought your dad was alright.” Albus smiled throwing out the thoughts of James teasing him about it, “I know one of the professors at the school personally, did you know?” “Really?” Scorpius looked impressed, “Which one?” “Professor Longbottom. He teaches Herbology.” Albus smiled at being able to impress Scorpius. It seemed as though impressing Scorpius was important to him. There was another knock on the door at that moment and Rose slid the door open slightly, “Hey Al, do you and your friend mind if I join? James said I’m too young to sit with the third years like him.” Albus looked at Scorpius then they both nodded and said at the same time, “Sure. The more the merrier.” Rose laughed at them, “What’d you two do? Practice?” She sat down next to Scorpius, brushed her curly red hair away from her face, then held her hand out to him, “I’m Rose Weasley and you are?” Scorpius took her hand, “Scorpius Malfoy. So what house do you want to be in?” “Well, my dad says that I should be a Gryffindor but I’d like to be a Ravenclaw. I have the brains for it after all.” Rose said as she started rooting through her bag of books she brought along, “I was just about to start reading about some of the classes. Have either of you started doing that yet?” “Actually,” Albus said reaching over and snagging one of her copies of ‘Defense is Life’ before flipping through it, “I thought this class sounded really cool.” Scorpius picked up one of her ‘Magical Drafts and Potions’ and glanced up at her, “May I?” when she nodded he started to flip through it, “Father said we should read up on the subject because Professor Slughorn isn’t as good as a teacher as he used to be.” Rose had her nose stuck in her copy of ‘a beginners guide to transfiguration’ as she replied, “Well I heard a rumor from one of the sixth years I passed that Slughorn retired and we’re getting a new potions teacher.” “Well I still wouldn’t want to be unprepared.” Scorpius then started to read the book muttering the words to himself as if to remember them better. “Mm Hm” Albus said in agreement, “My dad also said to be prepared with Defense. He said the curse has been broken for a while but it doesn’t mean it’s gone.” The trio laughed at that and started reading again as the forest started to go past the window and it started to get darker. And before Albus knew it he’d drifted off to sleep. Artemis walked down one of the corridors in her manor and stopped at a heavily sealed door. She pulled her wand out and started to undo the spells before finally pulling out a silver key and unlocking the door to enter a room covered in blood and filled with five fully transformed werewolves and two dead bodies, “Where’s Grayback?” Her voice caused all five pairs of golden eyes to lock onto her and five throats to rumble with growls. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a silver whistle which she blew and, even though no noise came out, caused all five werewolves to cover their ears and whimper, “I said ‘Where Is Grayback!?’” All the werewolves then dispersed showing a sixth werewolf sitting in the back with a young boy sitting on his lap. Grayback looked up then nudged the boy towards her with a growl. Artemis took the boy and pulled him to her, “Gale what did I tell you about playing with the werewolves on a full moon?” “Not to do it unless I want to be bitten?” The boy said looking up at Artemis from under his long black bangs with his bright blue eyes, “But they’re entertaining in that form Mother!” “I don’t care if they can play like Mozart, paint like Picasso, and sing like Angels at the same time I don’t want you hanging around them in that form. Now get your stuff packed you have to get ready for Hogwarts tomorrow morning!” Artemis started tapping her foot before he shot off to his room to get his stuff ready. Artemis raised her wand at the werewolves in the room, “You touch my boy again, Grayback, and I will use you as a fur rug.” Her dark eyes narrowed and green sparks shot out the end of it before she turned and walked away slamming the door behind her. “Al? Al! Albus! Wake up!” Albus groaned and sat up, “what?” He blinked a few times and turned his green eyes to see Scorpius looking worried standing over him. “You were mumbling in your sleep about werewolves and somebody named Gale.” Scorpius brushed some of Albus’s black hair out of the latter’s eyes, “and you seemed kind of scared.” Albus looked into his new best friend’s face for a few moments allowing the dream to rush back to him. After a few seconds he nodded and smiled, “I’m fine now. Thanks Scorpius.” Rose looked over at Albus with a worried look on her face then glanced at her watch, “We should get changed soon. We should be at Hogwarts any minute.” The boys nodded and rose left for a different compartment to change in while the boys switched into their Hogwarts robes and sure enough, after Rose had gotten back into their compartment, the conductor came over the loudspeaker, “We’ll be arriving at Hogmeade Station in a little under five minutes! Please change into your school robes and leave your trunks on board Filch will get them later.” The three new first years looked at each other and laughed slightly before Albus smacked his forehead, “Crap! I left Arlette with James and his owl!” with that Albus said a quick, “I’ll see you on the boat” then took off to find his brother. Skidding to a halt outside a compartment full of third year Gryffindors he slid the door open and peeked in at James, “Can I have Arlette?” James looked up then opened his owl’s cage and let out the golden brown female to put in her silver cage and handed the second cage to Albus, “Here I was letting them spend time together. You know how much Ezio likes her.” Albus nodded, “Thanks James. Ummmm…” Albus looked at the other third years, “sorry for bugging you.” “Oh! Right!” James smiled and rubbed the back of his head, “Guys this is Albus, my brother. Al, you know Aella Longbottom.” James gestured towards the thin blonde girl in the corner reading a book with her wand behind her ear, “And this is Tyler Thomas.” James now gestured towards a mixed boy with dark brown hair and deep blue eyes, “And last but not least,” He gestured towards a pretty Indian girl with sandy brown hair, “Maya Finnegan.” Albus nodded towards them then backed to the door, “Well I better go. My friends are waiting for me.” “Wait! Al, you got friends already?” James seemed to be shocked but smiled when Albus nodded, “Well tell them they better be careful.” “Yes, its Crumple-Horned Snorkack mating season.” Aella said looking up from her book at Albus with her deep brown eyes, “they tend to like forests.” Albus raised his eyebrows at James as Aella went back to her book then both boys burst out laughing at an untold joke between them. Albus then carried Arlette’s cage down to his compartment as the train slowed and met back up with Scorpius and Rose. Rose had gotten her kitten from its carrier and Scorpius had his black eagle owl perched on his shoulder as they pushed through the crowd onto the platform and started looking for the man yelling for the first years. “Firs’ years! Firs’ years this way please! Come on now don’ be shy!” Came the booming voice from quite a way above their heads where a lantern was bobbing. “Hagrid!” Albus and Rose called at the same time before both of them grabbed one of Scorpius’s hands and pulled him over to the half giant. “Albus!” Hagrid leaned down and gave Albus a one armed but nonetheless rib-cracking hug then did the same to Rose, “And Rosie too! Yer got bigger since I las’ seen ya!” Albus nodded and smiled knowing his Hogwarts years had started.
