I used to scratch my head and boggle at people who sell stuff waaaaaaaaaaaay above the store price (i.e., 10,000g for something that's 200g in the store) in the Marketplace. That they actually think people will be stupid enough to pay that. Then I saw the dimwits who are bidding 3,000g on a pair of 200g medical gloves, and realized why people sell so far above store price: they can. People truly will buy things for thousands more than the store charges. Why, I have no clue. It's those nimrods I scratch my head and boggle at now. It's not like Gaia doesn't clearly list the store price when you're purchasing.
The items which aren't avaliable in the stores, those selling for obscene amounts of gold are getting rich and more power to them.
This really bugs me. Starter items are listed as having a store price of 10g, but they aren't in any store! I joined many years ago, before Gaia was nice enough to set you up with clothes and stuff, so I never got any of the nice, shiny toys.
Somehow, despite my having set 'buy only' as the option for a bottle of ink I put up for sale, it still allowed bids. Some twit big 1g. *twitch* 1g is insulting. As if I'd accept 1g bid for something with a buy price set at 150g. Doesn't matter that there's still time left on the sale. I am not accepting 1g. Yes, it's to his advantage to bid way low and try to get something as inexpensively as possible. The store owner also has control over if they accept your bid and not a chance I'm letting that one get past when I can sell the ink for 150 times that. My store is basically a yard sale: I want to get rid of stuff and make a little gold in the process. I'll haggle with people over the price and if what they offer seems reasonable, I'm happy to let it go for a lower price. A reasonable lower price. I'm not in it for the gold but I'm also not stupid. Crumpled paper sells for 1g. Flowers sell for 1g. Ink? Not 1g. Total fail. To prevent anything like that happening in the future, in case the system burps again and allows bids on items I list as 'buy only', I set the minimum bid near the buy price.
