And we raced down the desolate highway in the pounding rain with the music up too loud and going way too fast. There was always the threat of losing control or not being able to make those split-second deicsions that needed to be made. All I could feel was the speed and the freedom of 90 MPH and the warmth of her arms around my shoulders.
"Fly baby," she whispered over the rush. "We can't keep on like this, but fly for now."
I knew she was right. Because you have to slow down or stop eventually, and then everything you've been running from catches up. No matter how fast you go it's not enough. No matter how far ahead you look there's an end. Pain is faster than pleasure, and more intensely felt.
"Because we can outrun it for now."
