The Key
I am working on a story inspired by a writing prompt that I got from a magazine which read. "You wake up with a key in your hand. Where did this key come from and more importantly what does it unlock?" This is chapter one. Comments welcome. wink

I stood in that dark, dank, deep dungeon facing my enemy. A dark wizard. I chased him up the spiraling staircase to the top of the tower. Panting, he looked at me and smiled. "It's in your hand now." he said calmly. Suddenly there was a loud blasting noise that continued consectutively. I graoned as I rolled over and hit the snooze button. I looked into the glaring red eyes of that sour tongued demon to see that it was already 7:30 and I was late for wrok. It took me another five minutes to finally drag myself out of bed. I made my sluggish way to th bathroom. In the mirror I saw the medusa like creature that is me in the morning. As I leaned over the counter to check for zits I ,as if it had just ben put there, felt an odd wieght in my hand. I looked to behold an old fashioned key. Upon further inspection I found that the stem looked like a pen and that my name was engraved on it. It was then that I decided to call in sick
By the time noon rolled around I had throughly convinced myself that no one had been in my house but me last night. Taking a break I sat at my grand table to a lavish feast of Roman noodles and warm flat soda. Ah contentment. As I ate my mind began to wonder ing finding it's self in another world in another time.
In a world where danger is a common visitor and you are well aquainted with war live a fiesty young girl with an amazing power. She can fly. The people of her small peaceful village are acustom to seeing her shadow cast over them as they hang up their laundry and go about the tasks for their day. They are thankful for her protection from those that might seek to destroy their peace. On one morning seemingly undifferent from the rest a great catalyst stuck. She was the first to see them. Large, lumbering, ugly. flew back to the village as fast as the wind would allow. Sha had to warn them. She motioned the watch tower men to sound the alarm and as they did she found that it sounded suspisiously like a-
Telephone. I sighed and with much relucatance rose to answer it.
"Hello?" I said half hoping for a telemarketer so I could just hang up.
"Hello, dear. Are you feeling alright?" I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, mother I'm fine." I slumped to the floor.
"Are you sure? I heard you called in sick today." I made mean faces at the phone.
"Yes" I would've given anything to hear a heavily accented voice pronouce my name wrong and try to sell me some wonder product I would never use. "I'm fine."
"Do you want me to bring you some soup?" I stood up and walked as far from the reciever as I could.
"No mother." The phone cord acted as an unbreakable leash as I faught to escape. I spent the next hour convincing my mother I would be allright and she didn't need to come over. Relief flooded me when I finally said goodbye and hung up the phone. I returned to my soup to find it cold. I walked into my small kitchen and stuck it in the mircowave. I turned and planted my head on the counter. It was then that I saw the key. I picked it up. It was rusty and careworn but for as ancient as it looked it was in good shape. I, again, began an atempt to discover what mysteries it held.
Three o'clock had made it's way into the day without my permission and I was still no closer to figuring out where this key came from or even what it was for. I decided that I should go for a walk to clear my head. I didn't bother with shoes or a coat I just walked out the door as I slipped the key in my pocket. After I had walked down every street I knew of with in a two mile radius of my apartment every way I could I made my way to the elementary school park and sat on the swings. I started pumping my legs swinging higher and higher.
The crew prepared for the single most important launch they would ever be a part of. They were in place and ready. Jenny, his unofficial aprentice looked over at the captain. "You ready fort his, Chris?" She asked.
He look confident as he said, "No." Jenny laughed. "I don't think I could ever be ready this." He told her honestly. She nodded in agreement. The robotic female voice came over the loud speaker. "Launch in five minutes. Please secure you life belts and close doors. Thank you and have a nice flight."
Chris sighed, "I hate that voice." He looked back at Jenny and the other crew members. "Seat belts kid's. We're going to Disneyland." They all chuckled and clicked their belts on. "Two minutes remaning." the overhead voice said coldy. "one minute reamining." The men and women on the ship took deep breath and took one final look at their families and friends. "Five.... Four... Three... Two.... One..... Launch." The previously still cockpit of the ship began to shake as the rockets blasted them up. Jenny closed her eyes and listened to the wind and fire blasting around her. It seem as if years had passed. Suddenly the motion and sound stopped. Jenny opened her eyes. To be greated by the dark beauty of space. She looked at Chris and her other crew mates. Their faces mirrored the wonder that she was sure reflected in hers. Such silence hung over them that a breath was painful to hear. Which made the loud blasting alarm coming from the ship even louder. "Danger failure to deploy. Engines too hot. Going critical. Destruction in one minute." a red light began to flash. Jenny unlocked her belt and flung herself at Chris. "What are we goin-" Chris put a finger to her mouth.
"There is nothing we can do." He said softly. He unfastened his own belt and embraced Jenny. "It's allright." The noise of the crew and the alarm all faded until all she could hear was the heart beat of the calm stoic Chris. Her silence was broken by a voice. It sounded far away. It was only one word.
"Lotus?" I drug my feet on the ground to stop swinging. I looked for the source of the voice only to find a face that not only put my mind in search and destroy mode but turned on a slide show of memories that I would've rather remained buired. "Lotus Lynn?" I remained silent fighting back the urge to strangle the man in front of me. "You do remember me don't you?" I atempted to wipe the contempt from my face. I don't know if I suceeded. "I would you think you would after-"
"Yes, Eric. I remember you." my voice was a lot more angry then I intended.
"Well, I won't trouble you with reintroduction then." He said oblivously. "So how have you been?" He seemed genuinely interested. Appearences can be decieving I thought bitterly.
"Okay." I managed.
"Well that's good I guess." He said apartently picking up on my distain. A pregenent pause hung mockingly between us. "I just moved into this area." He atempted to worm his way away from it. He shifted umcomfortably.
Good. I thought. "Really?" I choaked out. "Where?" To my sudden dread he pointed at the apartment building where I lived.
"It's nice to see a frien-" he fixed his words, "familiar face." I kept quiet. Once again resisting the violent impulses threatening to overwelm me. "Well I have to go finish upacking." he paused as if he was trying to talk himself out of his next coment. "I'll buy you lunch if you'll come help me." My rage climaxed as my mouth was about to unlease all the words I had reserved for him for the last two years when suddenly the forgotten key on my pocket tremored. I thought it was my imagination at first but then it did so again. "Are you allright?" Erik asked timdly.
"Yeah," I answered."I don't think I can-" the key tremored again. I suddenly had a thought. "You buy me lunch and I'll help you finish unpacking." I replied concetrating on the key. It remained motionless.
"Great. I'll show you my place."
