“Sarai and…Harman,” the teacher said stiffly from the front of the equally stiff and frigid room. Slowly, Sarai stood up and moved to the new seat she was just assigned to. She greeted her new science partner. As she did so, she drank in his darkness.
Harman’s hair was jet black, a great contrast to Sarai’s own bleached-white hair. His eyes seemed a dark gray, an overcast version of Sarai’s sky blue eyes.
“Hello, Harman,” she said. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Hi,” she heard him respond quietly, letting her measure his shyness.
“Class dismissed for research,” the science teacher said. She gave the exit door a wave of her hand and waited for its beep. After unlocking the door, she walked back over to her desk.
Sarai’s eyes lit up. She gathered her things together and then grabbed Harman’s wrist. With an unexplained enthusiasm, she said, “Come on, I know exactly what we should research.” And with that, she pulled him out of the room.
