Chapter 4: Allies
We stood at the cafeteria double doors. You could feel the tension between us! “Well open the door!” Hope ordered impatiently.
I was obviously a little apprehensive to open the door but I found the strength and flung them open. “Welcome to Neravien! Get a good look at the team who’ll be defeating you!!” I yelled with a swagger in my step.
Hope put her hand over her face and moaned sarcastically, “Nice going, Hotshot!” I tend to get a little cocky at times! Like now for instance, so Hope likes to call me ‘Hotshot’ sometimes.
Four other teenagers turned and stared at me as if I had an extra arm growing from my forehead. “It’s a little early for that isn’t it?” a girl on my right said.
“Never too early!” I told her. I grabbed Hope’s hand as we approached the girl and the boy that was sitting near her. “Soo,” I asked leaning over the table. “What’s your name, young lady?”
“Well, if you must know, it’s Curstan!” she replied with a giggle. Curstan was very fair skinned, had black hair that reached her shoulders, and was even a little taller than me.
Hope lightly pushed the side of my head and introduced us. “We are the Neravees of the race, as you can see! I’m Hope, and this,” she said glancing at me, “Is Dyron. Besides being my partner, he’s also my best friend!” she added hugging me.
The boy near Curstan stood and finally spoke, “I’m Curstan’s partner, Nathaniel.”
“Ok, now that we’re all introduced, where are you guys from?” Hope asked next.
“Kratias,” Nathaniel answered. He looked to be an ok guy. He and I were also similar in basic looks. Same skin tone, height, and even that bored expressionless face that you know is thinking of something crazy!
“So you’re a Battle like me Dyron!” Curstan observed. She and Nathaniel were dressed normally.
“So you are too? What’s your specialty?” I asked putting my hand to my chin.
“Small blades, y’know, knives and daggers, and also small projectiles like shuriken and kunai. How about you?”
I shrugged and answered, “Lots of things, but my favorite is the chain scythe! I’m working on double as soon as I get my hands on another one.”
Their eyes widened at my answer. But Curstan spoke first. She said, “You wanna die one way or another, don’t you Dyron?” with a bit of a laugh.
“Gotta happen sometime, right?” Hope broke in.
Nathaniel nodded in agreement saying, “She’s made a valid point!” On his finger was a ring used for healing, and a similarly made chain hung from his belt.
Hope, couldn’t help but question, “Nathan you’re a…Defender?”
“No, Mage! This ring is the only healing I have since Curstan’s good at first-aid. The chain is all of my destructive magic,” he explained showing us the colors of the rings formed into a chain. This was unusual for a Mage. But Hope stuck with wearing her rings.
“Nice!” I complimented. “Well, if we don’t win, we certainly hope you do!” I said and I’ll explain that statement later. So Team Kratias and Neravien made a pact that by what means necessary, Lamis would not win!
“Now,” I said turning. “Come Hope, and let us get to know the enemy that is Lamis. I feel we’ve already made an impression!”
