a short little sad story
Picture if you will an empty world. There's nothing but white empty space, empty space and a crowd of people. These people have formed a circle around one small child. This child clutches a small toy, her only source of comfort. The toy, however, is not enough. The child slowly turns inside the crowd of people looking for anyone she can find comfort in. One woman in particular gives off a strong motherly aura and the child is drawn to her instantly. Over half way there though the woman closes herself off and her aura becomes as cold as ice. The child backs up into the middle and continues her search for love and comfort. As she turns, more and more people are closing themselves off. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years seem to go by as she looks and never finding anyone. She has no one but her small toy which she clutches onto for dear life. Tears fall down her small cheeks and she screams a scream that no one but her and her beloved toy can hear. Finally, through a gap in the crowd she sees someone. This person is not like the others, he is completely black. Nothing about him can be seen yet his aura is the only one that she can see clearly now. Cautiously she walks towards him. When he doesn't turn her away she becomes braver and walks faster to him. He kneels down and opens his arms to welcome her. The child and her toy happily enter his embrace, thinking she had finally found a permanent source of comfort and love. The crowd of people turn and face the child and the shadowy figure that's holding her. They whisper amongst themselves, a small wave of worry washes over them. The child isn't fooled however, she knows that their concern is only an act. She snuggles into the black shadow and smiles. She lets her toy slip from her fingers and watches it fall to the ground beside her. The whispers from the crowd grow louder and louder but she is determined to shun them like they did to her. She keeps her back turned to them and focuses only on the person holding her so lovingly. A woman screams from the mist of the crowd and the child turns her head. The yell had come from the first person she had first approached and had turned her away. Her aura was still frozen at the core yet becoming warmer near the edges. The child turns towards her wanting more love. The shadow, however, had other plans. He grips her tight, not letting her go back to the woman. The child turns and gazes into his face, his features were becoming clearer now. What she saw frightens her and she tries to pull away. His grip was too strong for such a small child. The woman makes her way to the front of the crowd and takes hold of the child's other hand. They each pull at the girl. The woman wanting to bring her back to the light and the shadow wanting her to be in darkness. The child cries and screams for them to stop causing her pain but they never relented. The child's cries for help echo around the empty world. The crowd begins to break apart, soon leaving the three of them, the woman, the shadow, and the child who looks at her toy and wonders why she let him go. The child is consumed by the shadows darkness and the woman's light. She is consumed by both yet neither have her. She breaks away from the two fighting people and grabs her toy. She cries with it until she can't cry anymore and falls asleep. It's too late, the damage is done and the white empty space that she is so used to is slowly starting to turn black. The shadow figure lets out one low laugh before falling back into the darkness that has already consumed the silent world. The woman stays close to the sleeping child but makes no move to comfort her. Instead, she closes herself off even more to the world. In her sleep, the child is screaming and fighting herself. The battle between darkness and light will live in her forever. She has the power to change the outcome of their world. It's just a matter of the question of who will trust such a thing with such a small child? The child wakes and, seeing the woman there, moves on to another part of the world. Holding her toy close she pauses and looks around. Not seeing anyone, she speaks in hardly a whisper "and we're all dead now". At that point, the darkness moved ever so slightly forward, over the light.
