Here's a fic I just finished and I thought I'd post.
Chapter 1
The air around her was thick and damp as she made her way out of the car and shut it safely behind her. Thirty-year-old Michelle made her way over to the cemetery, a place she hadn’t been in fifteen years. Taking a deep breath, Michelle opened the large gate that seemed to stretch for miles on end and went inside.
This place hasn’t changed a bit. thought Michelle as she stared at the site before her. The graves were lined up in a row, one row going into another row. The threes were still empty as far as leaves were concerned, and the leaves dancing in the wind made Michelle shiver as she searched for a certain grave. Looking past all the graves, Michelle’s breath got caught in her throat when she saw his grave.
Walking on shaky feet, Michelle made her way over to the burial site and knelt down to get a good look at the stone tablet. It was the same as it was fifteen years ago, the dirt around it was cold; the flower she planted there was still there, but it was dead; just like the person buried 6 feet below her; dead.
Michelle sniffed back tears as memories of that day came flooding back to her. It seemed like yesterday she was at the hospital, crying her eyes out and clinging onto Mike as if he was her lifeline. She remembered when they took her to the funeral and she watched as his body was being lowered into the ground, never to see the light of day again. It was all just surreal to her that one day he’s playing a show, having the time of his life, and then the next day, he’s lying in a hospital bed slowly dying.
Michelle shook the tears from her face. It was bad enough that she was crying infront of his grave, and now the memories she wished she didn’t have are now attacking her one by one.
Michelle swallowed her tears and looked at the grave with sadness etched in her chocolate brown eyes. “Hey Ches.” She spoke so softly that it was barely a whisper, “it’s been a long time since I’ve visited you. A lot has happened in the last fifteen years.” Michelle could feel tears at the ends of her eyelids, screaming to be released. She knew that this was a bad idea, but she wanted to see him again.
Unknowns to her, an invisible figure loomed behind her. Flame-shaped tattoos crawled up his wrist to meet with the other collection of tattoos. His eyes held pain and sadness as he watched the woman who saved his life weep over his grave. He wanted to reach out and hold the broken young woman in his arms and tell her that everything was going to be ok; but due to the fact the he was dead and the dead can’t have commutation with the living, he had to watch her silently.
Michelle took a deep breath and continued. “The guys are doing great,” she said with much sadness in her voice. “They even found a new singer but we all know that he can’t replace you; no one can. This month they’re going to release their 20th album. It’s amazing how time flies.” She sniffed back a couple of tears. “Two years ago, they finally found the-the monster that was responsible for everything. He’s now serving a lifetime in prison. When we found out, I-I can’t even explain to you how happy I was. It felt like a boulder was lifted from my shoulders. I cried for God knows how long until I picked up the phone and said to Mike, “They got him.” I got together with the guys and we threw a big party to celebrate. I wish you could’ve been there. It was a great party. But we were missing one person. We were missing you.” Michelle wiped the tears rolling down her face and continued, “I am now happily married and I have three kids. One is a boy and the other two are girls. I named the girls Amy and Emily and I named the boy after you.” Michelle felt lightheaded and dizzy. She knew that she shouldn’t have come out here but this was something she had to do.
Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, she resumed where she left off. “My son wants to know everything about you. When he listened to Hybrid Theory for the first time he became hooked. Ever since he’s been asking me about you and wanting know if we could meet you someday. I’ll never forget the look of disappointment in his eyes when I told him we can’t. He’s too little to understand the reason why we can’t. I’ve tried explaining it to him but I get all choked up. Even Mike has tried to get though to him but he won’t listen. Maybe someday I’ll bring him down here so you two could meet. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.” Michelle smiled sadly while she remembered little Chester asking about him. “Mommy, I want to see Chester.” He had said one day.
Michelle let out a sob when she remembered her heartbreaking words to him. “Baby, we can’t see Chester. He’s in Heaven watching over us.” She had tried so hard to make him understand that Chester wasn’t with them and he wasn’t ever coming back, but he still persisted on seeing him.
Michelle looked up at the grey, storming clouds looming over her. She sighed. “Well, either you’re telling me to get away from your grave or the weatherman was right about the weather.” She half-smiled at the cold tablet and started to get up. Chester watched her with sad eyes as she walked to her car but was in awe about what she had told him. I’m really proud of you guys. 20th album already? Man, how time flies!
But just as she was about to exit the grave site, she turned around and said one last thing before leaving, “All the guys are coming over for a party tonight. Tonight is March 20th and it’s also the night that the band’s gonna release their 20th album. We wish you could be there. It’s going to be a massive party.” Wiping the crystalline tears off her face, Michelle whispered, “I hope you have a great birthday Chester. Goodbye.”
A tear slipped down Chester’s face as he watched the red SUV zoom by him into the busy streets ahead. “Goodbye Michelle.”
