1. Title: Girl v. Boy by Yvonne Collins & Sandy Rideout, ISBN: 978-1-4231-0157-4, Hyperion Books for Children, New York, 2008, $5.64, 320 pp. 2. Genre: Love / High School / Drama. Grades: 6 through 12. 3. Characters: Luisa (Lu) Perez, the protagonist of the novel does a column in the school news paper the Dunfield Bulletin, a girl vs. boy column, in a school battle for the month of December off. She's been thriving to get a boyfriend and doesn't know much about where her love life stands. Mac Landis, Most popular guy in the school hosting the boys side of the campain. Mariah, Most popular girl in school hosting the girl's side of the campain. Rachel & Izzy, Lu's best friends. Tyler Milano, one of Lu's crushes. Grace Perez, Lu's older sister. Paz, Grace's boyfriend and father of their daughter Keira. Joey, a guy from Paz's pack that has always had a crush on Lu but she never knew he existed even when the group came into the dinner Lu works at every day. 4. Plot: Lu's always been the girl no one noticed in a school with over 3,000 students. When her teacher asked her to write a column for the school paper she agrees. Her first assignment is to cover her high school's latest fund-raiser, which pits the girls against the boys. Luisa will cover the events from the female point of view, while another anonymous writer provides the male perspective, or, at least, that's how it begins. The two columnists soon find themselves engaged in an epic battle of the sexes, a battle that Lu's determined to win, even if it means risking the best relationship she's ever had. 5. Touchy Areas: There isn't anything within the book that is what's concidered "off-limits". 6. Related Titles: Graceling by Kristin Cashore, The Debutante by Kathryn Williams, Generation Dead by Daniel Waters 7. Movies: Mean Girls (2004), The War of the Roses (1989), The Battle of the Sexes (1959), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) Music: Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar, Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar Photos: Related Websites: Art: Poem: The Battle Of The Sexes (2009) by William E. Kesler Classic Work: 8. Evaluation: I absolutely loved the book. It's an epic story of the battle of the sexes and all the emotions involved. While Lu's trying to find a love life she's also crashing into the column competition as well. As she builds up her character from where she was unknown the previous school year, she's starting to get noticed. She ends up meeting Joey, a guy from her brother-in-law's group of friends that she never knew existed and falls in love with him. She never told Joey that she's Newshound, what she calls herself in the Column, because she's afraid of what he may think. I know that I would more than likely have the same outlook on things if I was her because in a way we are a lot alike. I would definately give this book a 10 out of 10.
