Rose and the Tea Talks
Rose took a sip of her peppermint tea, and looked up at the kitsunes in front of her. Sahm seemed edgy and Kyrre seemed eager to get moving. Rose wasn't sure about any of this, really. They had wanted to talk to her more, so she had agreed. She had led them into the kitchen and made them all tea. Now that she had started in on her tea, Sahm started talking, as if he had been waiting for her to start drinking out of courtesy. He had been, actually.
"Our people are ruled by a royal family. Our King died recently, and the only person left that has blood ties to him is..." he glanced at Kyrre before continuing. Kyrre nodded. "is a traitor to our kind. He has been working along with demons, and we believe he has an agenda that would bring ruin to our people.... Possibly enslavement." Sahm said, trying to get the point across.
Rose set down her cup of tea. 'And here I was thinking that they're problems were mostly imagined. Slavery? Seriously??'
"Go on." Rose said. "How does this have anything to do with my father?"
Sahm continued. "Your father was apparently our Old King's son. He was not... a full kitsune, and at the time, our people would not have accepted him into the community. King Ludan raised him for a while, but eventually had to send him away. There was a war looming between our people and the demons nearby at that time. Arxus was about... 6 or 7 years old at the time."
"When the war ended, twenty years later, with the demons in full retreat, Ludan sent some kitsunes to look for Arxus. They... never returned. A message got back, however, with one word. Barton. It was assumed that something lead them to Barton town, but possibly, that is where they lost the lead."
Rose listened, trying to focus into her tea to avoid staring. 'My father... abandoned because... because he was part demon, and there was a war. Who would do that?' she thought. She wasn't sure this seemed right. But still... she listened.
"So now that Ludan is gone to the White Forest," Sahm continued explaining, "a new King will be crowned for our people. We were hoping to find Arxus, and reinstate his title, and keep Estefan from taking power."
Rose just nodded. When no one said anything, she sighed and set her cup down.
"I told you already. He's dead. Killed by his full demon half-brother Luman. And I haven't yet had the opportunity to repay the favor." Rose said darkly. She fully intended to make sure Luman was killed.
"Right." Sahm said, a little put-off by her bluntness. He was a Speaker, but his role in the castle was usually to speak about issues, and those were never so curt as this. What he'd said so far had been hard for him to keep from elaborating.
Kyrre saw his friend's dilemma, and jumped in. "We understand, and your loss is also ours." he said, and took a measured pause. "But our trip here was not a complete loss." Kyrre said softly, and was staring at Rose.
Looking up questionably, she caught Kyrre's stare. His blue eyes wouldn't let her orange ones go.
"What... exactly...." Rose started to ask.
Kyrre just stared at her.
Sahm spoke, as if he just now caught on. "You're... the Granddaughter of King Ludan. You have more of a claim to the throne than Estefan, who is only the Grandnephew."
"You can help our people." Kyrre finished.
Rose just stared at them.

Whoo! Another queen in the house!
Nogard Don't listen to this one. She doesn't act like one.
Xangord You're just jealous that you weren't picked.
Nogard Hey, you weren't picked either and you're the firstborn.
Xangord But I'm not upset over it. Besides, I think Dragon's doing a better job.
