Unlucky: Part Three
I sigh as we walk into the hallway. That lesson was so boring and put me in a bad mood. Then my worst enemy unexpectedly appears. Kayla always sparks a feeling of hate in me. She is always up herself. She sneers at me as she walks past, bumping into me. My heart is squeezed and stabbed as we make contact. I get spun around with the force of our encounter. Kayla is facing me and she starts screaming. It is a blood-curdling scream, full of pain, and makes me wince. I stare in shock as her skin turns red and blisters. People start to scream and run. I want to throw up. Her bleached hair falls out. The blistered skin starts to peel and her screaming is more of a gargle before cutting off. The flesh on her face falls off the bone in little pieces and with a light squishing sound land on the floor. There’s no blood. I step back, horrified. Her eyes shrivel in their sockets. A putrid smell has filled the air. As soon as the pale bone shows it darkens to black and crumbles to the floor with a puff of ash. Kayla ends up in a red and black pile.
Oh, God! I run away as fast as I can, finally unfrozen. I could feel that my breakfast wants a reappearance. People walk around like nothing happened. I bang the toilet door then the cubicle door open and stop trying to hold it in. Oh, God! That couldn’t have happened! That’s impossible. I throw up more and more. My legs are weak. Things like that just don’t happen. Kayla – she just... rotted. The door opens.
“Hayley?”
Thank God it’s Jasmine. “Yeah.” I rub my eyes with the heel of my hands. I had to have imagined it. People don’t just rot where they stand. I throw up bile. The cubicle door opens.
“Hayley, are you okay?”
“No...”
“What happened?”
I stand up and flush the toilet. “Didn’t you see?” I go to a basin and wash my hands.
“See what?”
I look at her in the mirror. She does look confused. “Kayla. She...”
More confusion contorts her face. “Who?”
I turn around. “You know. Kayla. She’s always up herself. We hate her.”
She shakes her head. “You must be sick. I’ve never heard of this Kayla person.”
“You can’t be serious! Everybody knows her. Stop playing with me.” I look back to the mirror and neaten my hair.
The door squeaks open and Georgia walks in. “So this is where you went.” She notices me. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, better. Did you see what happened to Kayla?”
“Who?”
I’m getting concerned. “You can’t not know Kayla! And I swear you were right behind me when it happened.”
They shake their heads and I push past them. I could hear them follow me out into the noisy hall. I go back to where that horrible experience happened. What only remains are the smallest amounts of black ash, which someone steps on and it disperses with a puff. I thought the hall would be empty but it was full. Jasmine tugs on my arm and leads me to our next lesson.
“Gee, Hayley. What’s got into you?”
I want to respond sharply but it dies on my lips. It’s not me. What’s got into the rest of the school? I know what I saw and it wasn’t just Kayla rotting or melting or whatever it is. I shudder. Everybody saw it or else they wouldn’t have run. Georgia and Jasmine lead me into the classroom.
