In the manga, Rina was crying, and someone gave her his handkerchief. It was Hamasaki, and when Rina tried to give it back, he just told her to keep it. Hamasaki even asked,"Are you Rina-chan?" and after Rina said yes, he replied that she wasn't crying anymore, which was good.
Time after time, Rina and Hamasaki would catch each other at awkward moments. Lucia, Hanon, and Caren did spy on them and they did tease her about it, but of course, a few friendly pokes here and there didn't hurt anybody. After the battle with Gakuto (I'll use Gakuto instead of Gaito because this happened in the manga), Rina was returning to her "home country" (AKA kingdom). Hamasaki caught her while she was leaving, and said that if they happened to meet again, they should go out on a date. Rina agreed.
In the anime, Hamasaki isn't really portrayed as much of a flirtatious one; the animators seemed to have toned it down. He first saw Rina by the river reading Minku's letter and crying. Rina saw Hamasaki staring at her and left. The next time that happened, Rina was by the river again reading and crying, but she got up and headed towards the river. Hamasaki probably thought she was trying to kill herself, so he literally threw himself over her. Rina convinced him that she wasn't trying anything suspicious.
From then on, Rina kept blushing around Hamasaki, and even calls him by his first name, Masahiro. (In the manga, she just calls him "Hamasaki." wink Hamasaki calls her "Rina-chan", using a suffix used to indicate affection for someone close, but sometimes he does drop the suffix (If you drop the suffix then that indicates you're extremely close). Hamasaki is intrigued at how mysterious Rina is.
Rina and Hamasaki keep denying their feelings for each other, but everyone knows they are in love. Whenever Hamasaki decides to go have a little fun, he always invites Rina. Caren tried flirting with Hamasaki to get Rina jealous and confess her feelings, but of course, her plan was shot down when Hamasaki turned her down.
Near the end, after the battle with Alala, the auditorium was being crushed. Rina noticed that Hamasaki was trying to dodge the falling debris, helpless, and then he fell off a cliff. Rina was frightened and headed to rescue him, not caring if she revealed her mermaid self to him. Afterwards, Hamasaki woke up, and Rina was relieved. When Hamasaki saw how much Rina cared for him, he confessed his love to her and they kissed.
Rina and Hamasaki are found together most of the time, and do make a great couple. ^_^
