"I wish to leave this place." The Ice Princess sadly said to the snowflakes outside her window.
"No, princess, you are needed here. Tomorrow you must wed the Prince." The snowflakes spoke in unison. Their voices sounded like whispers in the wind.
"I do not love him." She spoke with no emotion on her face.
Her name was Zantania, and she was the Ice Princess. Her face was white as snow, and yet whenever she felt embarrassed, one could almost see a faint blush of pink on her icy cheeks. The people always approved of her. Who wouldn't? Zantania was very beautiful and mysterious. Nothing was quite normal about her, in fact she was extraordinary. Her eyes were like blue sapphires that whoever looked into them felt as if they had to possess her. Her silver hair always seemed to move with the cold breeze, it was never still, and yet it felt like silk and was never tangled.
Everyone in the Kingdom of Frost and Snow, respected her.
"She is such an obedient child."
"Wonderful child!"
"Oh, she is lovely! The King and Queen must be very proud of her!"
"She is well taught in the arts. She is well educated. She will make a fine queen one day."
These words did the commoners speak of in regards to Zantania, the ice princess. However, deep in the hidden chambers of her heart, Zantania was a rebel. She was growing weary of everyday royal task. She was lonely.
The snowflakes knew a lot about Zantania, for they can hear her crying at night. Unfortunately, not all the snowflakes were loyal to her, soon rumors spread throughout the kingdom.
"Have you heard, the princess is quite ill." Someone would whisper.
"She is ill. The princess is ill. The princess is sad and lonely." The winds would howl.
Soon the rumors reached the ears of the Ice King and his wife, the Ice Queen.
"She should at once be married to a suitable young man!" The King said to the Queen.
"But she is still young. Perhaps we should give her time." The Queen showed her motherly concern.
"If we give her time, it might be too late. She might run away, and that is what I fear." The King gravely continued.
"Then she must be married to her betrothed, Prince Frostle of the North Empire." Said the Queen.
The following morning, it was announced to the princess and to the kingdom, that she is to be wed as soon as possible. Upon hearing the proclamation, Zantania ran to the throne to speak to her Father.
"How could you? Immediately? I do not love him. You know I do not love him. He is arrogant and selfish!" exclaimed Zantania in a fit of rage.
"Silence, my daughter, you haven't even seen him. He is a grown man."
"Yes, I have. So many times, and I could not love him!" Tears streamed down her eyes as she remembered the countless times she was maltreated by the Prince while they were growing up.
"My daughter, the last time you saw him was ten years ago. He has changed. Do not be afraid. He is a responsible man."
The King stood up from his throne and embraced Zantania. As a father, it hurt him so to let his daughter go, but he believed that the time was right for him to let her go. The King was no longer young, having lived for a long time, it was necessary that there be a suitable heir to the throne.
