When my Grandfather sat there
His breathing slow and rough
We carried on with our lives
Denying that he'd had enough
When my Grandfather sat there
We would laugh and we would play
Trying to distract him from truth
And any sad words he tried to say
When my Grandfather sat there
He slowly began to fade
Right before our eyes he sank
No matter what efforts were made
When my Grandfather sat there
In a way that was not his own
No more to stand tall
No more to work as he was shown
When my Grandfather sat there
He had a few things to share
His pride in his children
His promise to always be there
When my Grandfather sat there
And saw all his children together
He breathed out and sat no more
Asleep now, smiling forever
