Chasing Summer
By: Diana Tieu
She talks to the trees and sings to the flowers,
Something I’ve been trying to do for hours;
But the flowers will weep and the trees will sleep
As soon as I begin to make a peep.
How does she do it? I begin to wonder.
I feel I should ask her before I sunder.
I check my breath and straighten my collar
And look for the girl who is not much taller.
She's dancing and playing with the sparkling water;
She starts to fall, and I wish I'd caught her.
But she's laughing a laugh with melodious joy,
It really is sweet, but I don't feel cloy.
My breath is visible as I breathe out.
There is no time for me to doubt
My irrational actions that grew from a feeling.
She's turning away, impressionably appealing.
I make a start to go to her,
The water will freeze; of this, I'm sure.
My hands get clammy and icicles form,
For the water and I, this is the norm.
But before I can even take a step towards her,
She's already gone.
