Rose slept slumped next to the door. She had kept constant vigil on Dragon for many hours... but gaurding someone sleeping is, well, sleepy work.
She awoke to a yell... something muffled, but angry. She thought the bit was "nix", but couldn't tell.
She looked back at the bed.
"Damnit!" she cursed. Where the hell did she go?? Rose thought furiously. Unfortunately, her cynical mind answered back: Wherever she wanted to, which could be anywhere.
Frustrated, she stormed out of the room in time to be knocked flat by some kind of magical burst that destroyed the room she had just been in and the other two that had been beyond it.
"What the hell?!" she said defiantly. She turned and almost tripped over Niko, who had been laying outside the door but was now alert and on edge.
"Let's go see what that was." Rose told Niko, who mewed back in agreement.
Rose ran through the house and almost slipped on the floor where Eria had cleaned up the blood of the dylos. (Rose refused to think about what had happened to the creatures themselves; she remembered vividly Koopa's hunger to "take care of them".)
Rose yanked open the door and sped outside (not the brightest thing to do, true) and almost ran into an enormous blue dragon. She stopped, eyes wide, and stared up at the beast. The Dragon's head was turned her way, and Rose found herself staring the dragon in the eye.
Rose walked carefully around the garden, giggling, watching her mommy trim the roses. She saw a large orange and black butterfly, and followed it, calling out to it; "Buhff-ly!". She passed the roses, and followed the butterfly through scattered trees. The butterfly alighted onto a branch, and slowly flapped its wings. Rose giggled, reaching up for the butterfly, trying to touch it though it was out of reach.
Suddenly, something purple shot out and grabbed the butterfly and yanked it back. Rose looked, and saw a black lizard, almost as tall as Daddy, eating the poor butterfly. Rose cried for the butterfly, and the mint mint-green colored eyes turned to look at her. Rose screamed, turned, and started running back towards home and mommy and daddy. But her toddler legs could not move quick enough. Then she tripped on a branch and fell. She wasn't hurt too badly, but the lizard was almost on top of her, and there were three more just behind.
"Rose! Stay down!" Dragon yelled to the little girl.
Rose turned her head and saw Dragon. She smiled. Dragon was mommy's friend. Dragon would help.
Suddenly, the person she knew as Dragon changed. She grew and turned a pretty blue color. In awe of the spectacle, Rose clapped. The great blue Dragon swept down on the black demon lizards, piercing them with ice shards and driving them off. Dragon chased them and hunted them down. Rose's mommy came running, and caught Rose up in her arms. Shortly, the blue Dragon returned. Rose heard Dragon and mommy talking, but didn't care. She reached out and hugged the blue dragon, mommy's friend Dragon, and was safe.
Rose gasped as if she had been dunked in ice water.
"Dragon?" she asked, but the dragon could not respond.
Rose looked past Dragon, footprints. Looking around, she also saw a long stick. Hurrying over to it, she recognized it was part of a weapon, with one end broken off. Not immediatly seeing the tip, she looked around. Then she looked up at dragon. She looked as if she could not move.
"Oh no." Rose said resignedly. She looked over at Niko. "Look for a wound; I think she got hit with this," she lifted up the spear shaft, " and the metal point is stuck in her, still. We need to get it out." Niko looked like she was going to get sick.
Rose and Niko looked around, but it wasn't long at all before Rose saw the blue blood trickling out of a wound in what would be her left thigh.
"Found it." Rose said reluctantly. She began to feel at the wound, but it was deep. Dragon didn't move or make any sound... which was probably a good thing.
It was many minutes later, and Rose was past elbow-deep in Dragon-flesh when she finally touched metal. She carefully pulled it, so as to make sure the idiot thing didn't crumble or leave any small bits behind.
Stepping back, Rose held in her hand a metal spearhead. Nothing out of the ordinary that she could see... but it felt wrong.
"Poison." Rose proclaimed, throwing it to the dirt away from Dragon.
"Great. Well, what the heck am I going to do now? I can't cure a poison if I don't know what it is. And I don't know what that is!" she said, her voice rising until she was practically screaming at the spearhead on the dirt.
Almost hysterical and covered in dragon blood, Rose walked around to Dragon's front.
"I'm sorry. I don't know what else to do." she said.
Rose plopped down on the ground next to Dragon's paw, and cried softly, mumbling any cure spells she could think of, hopelessly.
