Prologue
The moon shone on the smooth granite stones, turning them silver. The silence of night was broken only by the swift churning of the black river, and the whisper of the trees, swaying in the wind. There was stirring in the shadows, and dark lithe shapes crept stealthily from beneath the bushes, unto the silver rocks. The inaudible sheathing of claws, and cautious eyes darting left and right. A fight broke out as if on silent signal, and suddenly, the rocks were alive with wrestling, screeching cats. As the frenzy went on, and fur and claws flew, a massive black tabby pinned a ginger tom to the ground. He lowered his head to come face to face with the other cat. " Foxfur! How dare you hunt on LeafClan territory! Sunningstones belong to us!" the tabby growled, lifting his head triumphantly, but still glaring down into the deputy's eyes. " Face it, Ravenclaw. Sunningstones is ours! And if I can't make you realize you are on our territory, I think they can!" Foxfur retorted. He let out a caterwaul, and they was an answer, coming from the river's shore. Ravenclaw watched dumbfounded as several SunClan cats came racing into the battle, not even stopping to shake the water from their pelts. Foxfur took the LeafClan cat’s pause to his advantage, and gathered his strength to throw Ravenclaw off. The SunClan deputy forced the black tabby onto his back and pinned him down, as the other cat had done to him. He had him now. He lunged for his neck, but Foxfur had made a stupid mistake and forgot one of the most important things in a battle; Never leave your belly exposed. As the ginger tom made his move, Ravenclaw scrunched up his legs and scratched for his life. The deputy howled in pain as the LeafClan warrior's razor sharp claws made long gashes in his soft belly. Ravenclaw jumped up and batted Foxfur across the nose, claws unsheathed. Blood gushed from the wound and into the cat's eyes. The ginger tom yowled in agony. As all of this happened, the desperate scream of a LeafClan she-cat rose above the clamor. Ravenclaw watched as a wiry brown SunClan tom pounced on Dapplefur, LeafClan's youngest warrior. She bared her teeth and hissed, then shut her eyes in fear of her fate. The tom was taken aback by her sudden bravery, but then drew back his lips and went for her throat. Ravenclaw gasped, and left Foxfur behind to wail in pain. He raced to the she-cat's rescue, took the tom by the scruff and threw him off. He saw another enemy cat running towards them to attack. " Quick, Dapplefur, run!" he ordered, before turning back to the SunClan tom who had threatened her life. Dapplefur scrambled to her paws, wincing at the pain of the deep gash on her side, then raced away. Ravenclaw spat with rage as the tom sliced his nose open, and blood dribbled into his eyes in an instant. But his eyes cleared in a matter of seconds, and he lunged forward at the unsuspecting enemy. The LeafClan warrior sank his fangs into the SunClan tom's leg. He squealed and struggled free. “ Ravenclaw!” The yowl came from a warrior with a pelt as white as clouds in the sky. “ This is useless! There are too many SunClan warriors!” “ No, Cloudsky. LeafClan will never back down! We must stand our ground and fight!” the black cat yowled back, leaping to his Clanmate’s side. “ This is our territory and they have no right to be on it!” Blood was welling up in his nose wound again, and he shook his head impatiently, sending scarlet drops to the rocks below. “ LeafClan will honor your courage, Ravenclaw, but we cannot afford to lose anymore of our warriors.” Cloudsky urged. “ Morningstar will never expect us to win this battle, and it will be foolish of us to stay here and fight. We are against impossible odds here, Ravenclaw.” he continued, slashing at an oncoming cat. Seeing as how Ravenclaw was still unsure of leaving, Cloudsky put in. “ We will have another chance to avenge this defeat.” He met Ravenclaw’s amber gaze steadily, and the warrior nodded. Cloudsky reared away and sprang onto a large boulder. “ Retreat, LeafClan! Retreat!” he yowled. At once, his warriors squirmed and struggled away from their opponents. They made sure they were still spitting and snarling at the cats until they had left the battlegrounds. The SunClan cats were confused for a heartbeat. Was this battle so easily won? Foxfur let out a jubilant cry, and his warriors joined him in his caterwaul. Cloudsky looked down at his warriors, then flicked his tail as a signal to follow. They sprinted off the rocks and disappeared into the trees. Dawn was upon them in less than minutes. Ravenclaw followed last. He hesitated to leave the grounds, for he had wanted to drive off SunClan. He glanced back at the bloodstained battlefield. His face looked grim, and his eyes were turned up in furious slits. He finally leapt off the rock he was standing on, and dashed after his Clan into the silent forest.

In a deserted clearing, an old gray she-cat sat alone, gazing up at the clear night sky. All around her was the shadows of night, the hint of dawn, and the breathing and stirring of the sleeping LeafClan cats around her. A small golden and white she-cat emerged from a dark corner, and padded towards the other cat, her pawsteps swift and silent.
The gray cat turned her head to see who it was, though she already knew through scent. She dipped her head in greeting. “ How is Dapplefur?” she questioned.
“ Her wounds are very deep, and there is little hope.” answered the tabby, lying down on the night-cool grass. “ But I think I can heal her, and she is young and strong. I’m sure she will recover.”
“ And the others?”
“ They will recover as well, Morningstar.”
Morningstar sighed. “ We are very lucky not to have lost any warriors tonight. You are a very gifted medicine cat, Goldenleaf. I owe you many thanks.” She tilted her head again to look at the stars. “ LeafClan has not lost a battle on their own territory since I became leader,” she murmured. “ I fear for our Clan. These are difficult times for us. The late season of newleaf has not brought many kits. LeafClan needs more warriors if it is to survive.”
“ But the year is only just beginning.” Goldenleaf pointed out calmly. “ There will be more kits when newleaf does come.”
The gray cat twitched her ears. “ I hope. But we have to wait six moons for kits to become apprentices, and then training apprentices takes time, too. We must have new warriors as soon as possible to defend our territory.”
“ You are asking StarClan for help, are you not?” meowed Goldenleaf gently, following her leader’s gaze and staring up at the swath of stars twinkling in the dark night sky.
“ Yes, Goldenleaf. It is at times like this we need the words of ancient warriors to help us. Has StarClan spoken to you recently?” Morningstar asked.
“ Not for some moons, Morningstar.”
Suddenly, a shooting star blazed over their heads and the treetops of the forest, a thin white streak in the waking dawn. Goldenleaf’s tail twitched and the fur along her spine bristled.
Morningstar remained silent as the medicine cat continued to gaze up at the sky, her green eyes glazed over.
After a few moments, Goldenleaf lowered her head and turned to Morningstar. “ It was a message from StarClan.” she mumbled. A distant look came into her eyes. “ The ice will freeze the threat the shadows bring, and the fire will thaw the dangers in our Clan.”
“ Fire? Ice?” Morningstar echoed. “ But fire and ice are feared by all of the Clans! How can it save us?”
Goldenleaf shook her head. “ I am afraid I do not know.” she admitted. “ But this is the message StarClan has chosen to share with me.” she stood up a bowed her head. “ I will try to decipher it as much as I can, Morningstar. Now I have to tend to the injured cats, and then I must retire for the night. Dawn is approaching soon and I must get some rest. StarClan be with you, Morningstar.” she backed up towards her den, her head still bowed for her leader.
“ Oh, Goldenleaf,” Morningstar whispered. “ You have never been wrong before.” She fixed her bright blue eyes on the stars once more, before putting her head down and closing them. “ If StarClan has spoken, then it must be so. Fire and ice can save our Clan.”
