Chapter One: Daichii
'Beep, beep, beep!' went the alarm buzzer, ringing nonstop now that it had gone off. The obnoxious sound echoed throughout the room. A loud groan escaped from a lump underneath the covers, and a small, thin arm found its way out from beneath.
The hand belonging to it searched for something, an object to throw at the annoying clock. Finding what it was looking for, the arm flung its ammunition at the clock. It hit its target and the room went silent.
But only a few seconds of silence past before to lump threw off the covers to reveal a young boy around thirteen years of age(soon to be fourteen).
" OH MY GOSH, I FORGET!" he yelled, throwing the blankets aside and swiftly climbing down the bunkbed ladder. Daichii Niwa rushed to his closet, but with clumsiness running in his blood, he slipped on some random papers scattered across the floor and fell flat on his face.
He shot up, his pinkish-red hair falling over his eyes. " Darn it, I can't be late!" he muttered, pulling off his pajama top. But he got caught up in it and slipped again. " GAHH!" he screamed, as he went down.
" Kyuuuuu!!!" came a small squeak. Daichii sprang up. " Ohh no! Wiz! Are you okay?" The small white rabbit lay on the floor, seeing stars. " Kyuu..." he replied dizzily.
" I'm sorry, Wiz, but I have to get ready. Today is a special day." And finally, with no more delays, Daiichi got dressed and ready, then grabbed his backpack. Next, he slid down the stairway railing, and dashed into the kitchen, taking a seat at the table.
" Good morning!" his mother, Riku, greeted. " What would you like for breakfast?"
" Um.. just some toast would be fine." Daiichi replied quickly, scribbling down some answers on a ditto he had had for homework the previous night.
" Just toast... honey, are you in a rush or something?" Riku asked, setting a plate down in front of him.
" Yeah, Mom, sorry. It's just that I promised Ren that I'd meet her by the fountain in the park this morning.. She said she wanted to.. give me something." Daichii explained, blinking his red eyes.
" Oh, okay then, honey.." she replied, wearing a smile on her face.
Suddenly, Daichii's younger sister, Miyuki, bounded into the room, in her usual upbeat and perky mood. " Daichii's just hoping that Ren's gonna give him an early birthday kiss." she teased. Upbeat and perky, but still a brat.
Daichii's face turned pink. " I-I am not!" he stammered. " Ren just wants t-to give me something, and that's it!"
" Whoa, chill, Dai! I was just messin' around with ya! Haha!" Miyuki said with a giggle.
" O-Oh.. Okay, well in that case, I got to go. Bye guys!" he told them, grabbing the toast from his plate and running into the living room for the front door.
His father, Daisuke, had been sitting on the couch, reading the newspaper. But he had heard the whole conversation. " Good morning, Daichii! Off to see Ren?" he asked.
" Huh?! H-How did you... Rrgghh, stop eavesdropping!"
Daisuke threw his head back and laughed. " I'm just kidding with you, Dai. Now hurry up, you don't want to be late."
" Ahhhhh! You're right! Bye, Dad, I'll see you later!" Daichii darted out the door. " Love you!" he called back.
Riku came into the living room and sat down next to her husband, laying her head in his arms. " I swear, he's like you in almost every way, Daisuke. I see it more and more each day.." she said, grinning.
" Heh, yeah... But I just hope he's ready for the biggest change of his life."
~
Ren... There she is... Daichii thought, approaching the brunette slowly. She was sitting on the ledge of the fountain, hair swaying in the breeze and a misty spray rising up behind her.
" Uh, uh, G-good Morning, Miss Mizaki.." he stammered, trying to relieve his rapid heartbeat.
" Oh! Good morning, Niwa!" Ren answered, looking up as the redhead sat down beside her. She smiled warmly, and Daichii couldn't help but tinge pink. She's so.. adorable...
" So.. um, why did you ask me to.. meet you here?" Daichii asked.
" I wanted to give you something.." Ren replied, searching through her bag. " For your birthday."
" Oh, um.. Thank you.." Daichii said, as Ren handed him a small box.
" Go ahead, open it!" she urged. Daichii nodded and flipped open the lid. A tiny silver ring lay embedded in soft foam, and on that band was an engravement.
" It's... I-I don't know what to say.." the redhead said, blushing. Wow.. I can't believe Ren would give something as special as a ring!
He looked up an smiled at her. Oh, I almost forgot! I have to give her the letter I wrote! I spent all night working on it... Daichii reached in his bag, but stopped when Ren said, " It's a friendship ring. It's supposed to keep a strong bond between us forever, as life long friends."
Daichii felt like he was going to faint. Friends?! For... life?! But.. I want to be more than just friends, Ren! I... I love you! was what Daichii Niwa wanted to scream out. But he couldn't. His voice was dead in his throat.
" Niwa? What's that?" Ren asked, pointing to the light blue envelope that Daichii had begun to pull out of his bag. Reality came crashing down on him, that if Ren didn't love him now, she probably never would.
" Huh?! Oh, wha-AHH!" And that's also when he realized that Ren had caught a glimpse of the letter, and now she would probably want to read it, girls being as curious as they are.
" NO! No, it's n-nothing!" he stammered, leaping up. " I h-have to go now, Ren! I'll see you later, thanks for the gift!"
Daichii sped off, leaving the love of his life behind him. But he couldn't love her anymore. She hadn't turned him down, but that's what it felt like for the redhead named Niwa.
He sighed. Well, I thought today would go well, but just my luck, it's not looking good... Today's forecast; depression, with a chance of rain..
~
" Mom! I'm home!" the redheaded teen called out, throwing his backpack on the floor and heading for the stairs. " I'm going up to my room!" To cry my eyes out.. he thought.
Daichii bounded up the stairs, taking the steps two by two. He opened the door to his room, and shut it gently behind him. He slowly turned the lock, and then flopped down on his bed. He wanted to bury himself in the pillows and scream, cry.
" Why can't anything go my way?" he said to himself, wiping away a tear that was rolling down his face.
" Kyu!" Wiz squeaked, jumping up to see his owner. " Hello, Wiz." Daichii whispered, sniffling.
" Kyuuuu.." the white fuzzball cooed, rubbing his face on Daichii's cheek. The redhead patted him on the head, and then turned over.
" I'm gonna take a nap." he muttered under his breath. Wiz curled up beside him and fell asleep quickly. Daichii tried as hard as he could to rest, but despite his words and intentions, he couldn't. There was too much on his mind.
It's a friendship ring..
Daichii shut his eyes so tightly, it hurt. They leaked tears, but he didn't care right then. He just couldn't get Ren off of his mind.
I have to find someone else, someone who will see me more than just a friend.. But..
He said that he wanted to find someone to love him back, but it was impossible. He couldn't just stop liking Miss Mizaki at the snap of fingers. And it would be hard in the first place. His heart reaced everytime he was with her, heck, anytime he thought about her.
It's beating really fast right now.. because I'm thinking about Ren.. Daichii thought.
He sighed, then let out a yawn. Now, he really was tired. His tears were making him drowsy.
At least I can still dream about her..
******
Daichii awoke the next morning with a loud yawn. He looked over at the alarm clock, and his eyes widened. " Oh no! I'm going to be late!" He jumped out of bed, landed gracefully on the floor, and began to get dressed.
The redhead ran over to the mirror and started to comb out his hair. Darn it, darn it, darn it! I can't be late for school! He adjusted his tie and grabbed his backpack, then headed downstairs.
" Good morning, Daichii!" Riku called out cheerfully, as her son took a seat at the kitchen table.
" Mom, please, I have to hurry, I'm going to be..." His voice died in his throat when he looked up at the clock to see the time. 6:00.. " Late.."
" Haha, well, I'm guessing Miyuki accomplised the job I assigned her." Riku laughed. " I told her to turn your clock ahead an hour, so you'd get up earlier today." Daichii looked confused.
" Oh, come on, Dai! Can't even remember what day it is?" his father chuckled, entering the room.
" Oh! It's my birthday!" Daichii realized. " Wow, I was so upset yesterday and this morning was so hectic thst I had totally forgotten.."
His parents were looking at him worridly. " Upset?" Riku inquired. " Daichii, did something happen yesterday?"
" N-No, nothing happened, don't worry about it!" he stammered nervously.
" No, I think something happened." Daisuke said, sitting down at the table next to his son. He shot a serious look at his wife, who nodded. " I'll.. I'll be right back." Riku said, walking out of the kitchen, leaving the two to talk.
" Dad! I'm telling you! Nothing's wrong!" Daichii urged, trying to get out of this conversation.
" It's Ren, isn't it?" Daisuke replied, ignoring his son's plea. Daichii sighed with defeat and nodded. He could feel tears welling up in his eyes. " Yes.. I-I wrote a letter to her.. worked all night long on it. But before I could even give it to her, she said she just wants to be friends..." He sobbed quietly, and Daisuke patted on the back.
" Daichii.." he sighed. " The same thing happened to me on my fourteenth birthday. I wrote a love letter for Aunt Risa, who I was crushing on then. She said she didn't feel that way about me, however, and it felt like my heart was ripped apart." Daisuke explained.
" Yes, but everything worked out for you!" Daichii said, gasping for air. " Ren'll never love me, I just know it.."
" Well, you're right that I can't help you.." Daisuke admitted." But who knows? Maybe Ren's feelings will change over time."
" Maybe..." Daichii muttered, not believing it, but wanting to.
" Now, come on." his father said. " Your mother made breakfast. Let's sit down as a family and eat. And later, after school, we'll celebrate your birthday. Okay?"
Daichii nodded, smiling a bit. He sighed. Maybe things would work out today. It was his fourteenth birthday after all.
Nothing can go wrong tonight... he thought.
